UPDATED 1/10/17

Welcome back to the Neast Beat.

Tuesday Wednesday is a big night for boys’ hoops across District 2 (thanks, Mother Nature).  Mid Valley will visit long-time nemesis Holy Cross.  These teams have staged some incredibly close games in recent years.  In the Wyoming Valley Conference, Holy Redeemer will be hosting Nanticoke Area.  Expect a raucous crowd on hand for that showdown.  And, in one of the most-anticipated tilts all season, top-rated Scranton Prep (8-1) travels to take on #2 Abington Heights (10-1) in a battle for the Lackawanna League Division 1 lead.  Look for these top rivals to tip-off before an overflow crowd.  The difference in this one could come down to how well the Comets can stay out of foul trouble and how effective the Cavaliers attack the basket.  Stop back for updates throughout the week.

See you in the bleachers !

Division 2 teams completed a highly successful week, going 11-1 in crossover games against Division 3 teams creating a 5-way logjam atop the standings at 3-0.  That also includes Berwick and upstart Wyoming Area as the sole remaining undefeated (8-0) boys teams in District 2.  The Bulldogs pulled away in the second half to get a hard-fought 56-47 win over Wyoming Seminary as they got 24 points from Damon Beckhorn and 21 combined from Matt Champ and Jude Goddard.  Goddard would miss their next game with an ankle injury, a 60-35 romp over MMI Prep, as four Dawgs reached doubles (Alec Markle 22, Champ 13, Ken Marshman 10, and Beckhorn 10).  Wyoming Area came away with wins over Lake-Lehman (80-32) and Wyoming Seminary (53-36).  Sam Greenfield netted 17 while Matt Wright added 10 in their win over the Black Knights.  Greenfield then joined Ryan Shuleski with 10 points while Kyre Zielinski led the way with 14 as the Warriors controlled the 2nd and 4th periods in their win over the Blue Knights.  Nanticoke Area got a big win over their top rival Hanover Area (52-38) along with a 48-22 victory over Northwest Area.  Luke Butcyznski scored a dozen in their win over the Hawks while Zack Cardone contributed 9 points in the W over the Rangers.  Wilkes-Barre Meyers also logged a win over Northwest Area, 53-44, as Matt Dessoye led the way with 20 while Ryan Gilgallon and Robbie Formosa combined for 22.  The Mohawks then got a big 59-49 victory over Holy Redeemer as they held off the Royals in the final period.  Dessoye and Levaugn Soules combined for 20 while Juwane Buckner hit 14.  Wilkes-Barre GAR got 15 from Keyshawn Palmer and 11 each from Will Johnson and Andrew Campbell in a 61-21 win over MMI Prep.  The Grenadiers then added a 71-37 win over Lake-Lehman as they placed four players in doubles (Campbell 18, Johnson 15, Anthony Hawk 13, and Palmer 11).    Tunkhannock split their pair of games, dropping a close 51-39 loss to Holy Redeemer but then bouncing back for a 62-46 win over Hanover Area.  Avery Newhart and Evan Turner each had 8 for the Tigers in the loss to the Royals.  In Tunk’s win over the Hawks, Sean Harder led the way with 18, Turner added 15, and Tyler Faux chipped in 10.  The Tigers controlled the 1st and 3rd periods in that one, 42-15.  It’s a busy 3-game slate on tap this week, all crossover tilts against Division 3 opponents.  Nanticoke visits Holy Redeemer Wednesday night in a great matchup.  On Thursday, the Royals travel to play undefeated Berwick.  Saturday is highlighted by Holy Redeemer again taking on yet another undefeated squad, Wyoming Area.  Next Tuesday features a fantastic lineup of games, all crossovers against Division 1 teams.

As the saying goes, there are always two sides to the coin.  Side one reveals that Division 3 teams endured a woeful 1-11 mark last week.  The flip side is that everyone in the division only trails Holy Redeemer by a single game.  The Royals jumped out to a big halftime advantage and then held off Tunkhannock 51-39 as they were led by Joe Layaou and Colin Cook who each netted 10 points.  Against Wilkes-Barre Meyers, the Royals’ second half rally fell short, 59-49 to the Mohawks.  HR got 13 from Joey Judge, 11 from Cook, and 10 from Nick Prociak.  Wyoming Seminary had a challenging week taking on undefeated Division 2 squads Berwick and Wyoming Area.  Dimitri Gnall hit 18 while Nicholas Ganter and Jeremy Callahan each added 12 as the Bulldogs pulled away in the third stanza for a 56-47 win.  Gnall then netted 15 points in a loss to the Warriors, 53-36.  Northwest Area got 18 points from Jaxson Yaple and 15 from Sam Saxe as the Ranges played Meyers tough, but came up short, 53-44.  Saxe then hit 12 while Yaple was limited only 2 points as Nanticoke Area topped Northwest Area, 48-22.  MMI Prep got a 2-game 23 point total from freshman Phillip Byriel as the Preppers dropped games to Wilkes-Barre GAR (61-21) and Berwick (60-25).  Hanover Area got 15 points from Mike Piscotty but the Hawks lost to top rival Nanticoke Area 52-38.  Piscotty then scored 13 while Tyler Diggs was top scorer with 20 points as Hanover lost to Tunkhannock, 62-46.  And Cole Spencer had a 2-game total of 20 points in losses to Wyoming Area (80-32) and Wilkes-Barre GAR (71-37).  This week brings a three-game schedule.  On Wednesday, Holy Redeemer hosts Nanticoke Area in a crossover tilt.  On Thursday, the Royals visit undefeated Berwick while Wyoming Seminary travels to Wilkes-Barre GAR.  Saturday features Holy Redeemer entertaining undefeated Wyoming Area.
