Division 2 teams completed a very successful run through crossover games against Division 3 opponents.  Now, they begin matching up against the larger 5A (and 6A) teams from Division 1.  Wilkes-Barre Meyers took over the top spot in the standings with wins over MMI Prep, Wyoming Seminary, and Wyoming Valley West Tuesday night.  Juwane Buckner and Levaugn Soules each scored 12 points in their 70-21 win over the Preppers.  The duo then combined for 31 points while Matt Dessoye and Omar Kelly each netted 11 in their 55-48 win over Seminary.  Tuesday night, Buckner hit 21 points and was one of 4 players in doubles as the Mohawks topped Valley West, 75-65.  Nanticoke Area, Berwick, Wyoming Area, and Wilkes-Barre GAR all suffered their first conference setback.  And the losses Tuesday night by the Bulldogs and Warriors were their first defeats on the season.  Nanticoke’s third period rally (29-22 halftime deficit into 38-34 lead) fell short as Holy Redeemer regrouped to post an emotional 52-47 win over the Trojans.  In the loss, Luke Butczynski led the way with 24 points (including 5 triples) and Zack Cardone added 11.  GNA rebounded for a 71-50 win over Lake Lehman as Trahjan Krupinski lead the way with 18 and Butczynski added 10.  Nate Kreitzer then had the hot hand with 5 triples (19 points) and Butczynski 13 as the Trojans doubled up MMI Prep, 56-28.  Tuesday night, Nanticoke made it three wins in a row with a 63-27 victory over Wilkes-Barre Coughlin.  Berwick got wins over Holy Redeemer (55-50) and Northwest Area (48-24) before dropping their first loss to Pittston Area (74-60) Tuesday night.  Jude Goddard (12 points) led four players in doubles (Damon Beckhorn 11, Ken Marshman 10, Alex Markle 10) in the come-from-behind win over the Royals.  Goddard and Markle then combined for 31 points in their win over the Rangers.  In their loss to the Patriots, the Dawgs trailed at the break 42-26.  Wyoming Area rolled over Hanover Area 65-32 as Tony Saitta paced the Warriors with 15 (with 3 treys).  WA then got a dozen each from Anthony Nardell and Sam Greenfeld as they nipped Holy Redeemer 43-40.  Tuesday night, Crestwood handed the Warriors their first loss, 41-34.  Wilkes-Barre GAR had several close games, defeating Wyoming Seminary (44-39) and Hanover Area (60-54) before almost upsetting Hazleton Area Tuesday night (65-58).  Keyshawn Palmer hit 13 and grabbed 12 boards, Will Johnson 12, and Herman Suazo 10 as the Grenadiers held off a Sem rally.  Johnson then led the way with 23, Andrew Campbell 17, and Palmer 14 in their win over the Hawks.  Tunkhannock captured a pair of D3 crossovers before losing to Dallas (58-27) Tuesday night.  Sean Harder and Tyler Faux combined for 25 in their 55-32 win over Northwest Area.  The Tigers then controlled the middle periods (40-24) as they topped Lake-Lehman, 72-55.  Faux had a big game with 23 (including 4 triples), Evan Turner 18, and 11 each for Avery Newhart and Sean Harder.  Exciting crossovers against Division 1 teams again highlight the schedule.  On Friday, Meyers hosts Crestwood, GAR entertains Dallas, Wyoming Area plays Wyoming Valley West, and Pittston visits Nanticoke Area.  Next Tuesday, Nanticoke is at Hazleton, Berwick at WVW, Meyers at Pittston, Wyoming Area at Dallas, and Tunkhannock at Crestwood.

There’s been a lot of discussion recently on the crossover game format dominating the early part of the schedule for Division 2 and 3 teams (and the overall lack of wins for the smaller schools).  While the 2-29 mark speaks for itself, it should be pointed out that there were a handful of extremely competitive games last week which could have gone either way.  Holy Redeemer, so far, has found the most success in Division 3.  Last week, the Royals held off a Nanticoke rally, getting 10 points from James Kosik (plus three other players with 8 points), for a 52-47 victory.  HR then came up just short to a pair of previously-undefeated squads, Berwick (55-50) and Wyoming Area (43-40).  Joey Judge and Nick Prociak combined for 22 in their loss to the Dawgs.  In their loss to the Warriors, Kosik and Judge teamed up for 21.  Tuesday night, the Royals came away with a 54-32 win over MMI Prep.  Wyoming Seminary got their first division win Tuesday night, 48-31 over Northwest Area.  Last week, the Blue Knights dropped close games to Wilkes-Barre GAR (44-39) and Wilkes-Barre Meyers (55-48).  Sem was extremely competitive and led both games late into the second half.  Dimitri Gnall netted 17 in the loss to the Grenadiers and Jeremy Callahan hit 21 in the loss to the Mohawks.  Hanover Area continues to play very well despite losing Brandon Chafin for an extended period (knee injury).  After dropping a 65-32 loss to Wyoming Area, the Hawks nearly pulled off the upset against GAR (losing 60-54) as Mike Piscotty (22 points) and Abaad Hamley (19) led the way.  Tuesday night, Hanover defeated Lake-Lehman 51-43.  Lake-Lehman continues to get strong efforts from Cole Spencer and Tyler Scharff.  Spencer had a 2-game total of 28 in losses to Nanticoke Area (71-50) and Tunkhannock (72-55).  Scharff had 27 over the same 2-game span.  Northwest got 10 points from Sam Saxe in a 55-32 loss to Tunkhannock while Tyler Stevens netted 7 in a loss to Berwick (48-24).  And Philip Byriel hit 10 points for MMI Prep in a 56-28 loss to Nanticoke Area.  Coming up, intra-division play is on the schedule.  Friday night, Holy Redeemer visits Wyoming Seminary in a key matchup.

Scranton Prep continues to lead Division 1 following wins over top rival Abington Heights and Valley View.  In their pulsating 54-51 win over the Comets, Leo O’Boyle broke free in the closing seconds to hit what proved to be the winning triple for the Cavaliers.  Paddy Casey led the way for Prep with 22 points (including 4 treys) while Logan Bailey added 10.  The Comets battled back from a 15-point deficit (42-27) and then a later 9-point gap (51-42) to tie the game in the closing moments.  AH got 14 from George Tinsley, 11 from Jackson Danzig, and 10 from Trey Koehler.  An overflow crowd, which spilled into the nearby auditorium, took in the heated rivalry.  Against Valley View, Prep used a 23-4 run through the second stanza for a 63-37 win over the Cougars.  The Cavs got 13 each from Greg Bormes and O’Boyle plus 11 from Bailey.  Marc Kudrich netted 17 for the Cougars.  Tuesday night Prep got 21 points from Nick Dende in a 77-40 crossover win over North Pocono.  Abington Heights bounced back from their loss to Prep for a 56-24 win over West Scranton as the Comets used a big first half (26-11) to take control.  Danzig led the way with 18, Tinsley 15, and Koehler 10.  Matt Williams had 9 points for the Invaders.  Scranton also trails Scranton Prep by a game after a 66-54 crossover win over Honesdale.  The Knights took a 20-6 lead after the first period and got 15 points from Ky’Ron Harbin plus 12 each from Matt Hart, Robbie McAndrew, and Nasir Cunningham.  Tuesday night, Scranton added a 59-28 crossover win over Delaware Valley as Matt Hart netted a dozen points.  West Scranton evened their mark at 2-2 on Tuesday following a huge night for Cole Stetzar (32 points, including career #1,000) in a 59-49 win over Valley View.  Last week, Valley View got their first division win with a 39-35 crossover victory over Wallenpaupack.  Brian Durkin and Marc Kudrich teamed up to score 23 for the Cougars as they took a 12-point halftime lead.  There were also a pair of outstanding non-league games on Saturday.  Scranton played EPC contender Pocono Mountain West tough all afternoon (leading 49-45 entering the final period).  But PM West would end the game on a 9-0 run for a 64-55 win.  Harbin led the Knights with 18 while Isaiah Wiggins (24 (with 5 treys) and Jalen Vaughns (20) led PM West.  Scranton Prep visited Pottsville and played the Tide even through the first half (23-23 at the break).  Jordan Abdo netted 26 of his 31 points in the second half to put Pottsville up 45-31.  It was part of a 5:30 drought for the Cavs.  Prep continued to battle back but came up short, 65-58 as they got 21 from Dende and 14 from Casey.  On Friday, Abington Heights hosts Scranton and West Scranton entertains North Pocono in a crossover tilt.  Saturday, Scranton battles West Side at Marywood University.  Next Tuesday, Scranton travels to North Pocono and West Scranton visits Delaware Valley in crossover matchups.

The Division 1 race was already pretty intriguing.  Add in a bunch of crossover games against highly-regarded Division 2 opponents and get set for some exciting hoops over the next few weeks.  Hazleton Area’s win over Pittston Area combined with the Lady Patriots getting by Wyoming Valley West, created a tie atop the division.  Last week, Hazleton Area jumped out to a seemingly comfortable 31-11 advantage against Pittston, only to see the Lady Pats rally for an eventual 38-35 lead.  The game would head into overtime before the Lady Cougars would regroup and hit 3 triples for the 70-59 victory.  In the win, Hazleton placed four players in doubles – Kendra Pfeil 24, Marissa Trivelpiece 14, Megan Trivelpiece 13, and Maddie Mrochko 11.  PA also got four players into double figures – Leah Hodick 16, Taryn Ashby 15, Alexa Noone 14, and Kirsten Durling 12.  Pittston then rebounded to defeat WVW 46-42 as their superb freshman (Hockick) again came up big with 24 points while Ashby added 11.  Valley West, who led at the break 21-19, got 26 combined points from Erin Gibbons and Gabby Smicherko.  Monday night, Pittston added a 50-38 crossover win over Berwick as Durling reached 28 points.  The week also began with an impressive 48-36 WVW win over Crestwood as Gibbons (16) and Smicherko (15) again led the way with Andi Blasko adding 13.  The Lady Comets got 16 points from Julia Markowski and 10 from Sarah Hopkins.  Monday night, Gibbons contributed 21 points in a 52-37 crossover win over Lake-Lehman.  Crestwood bounced back from their loss to WVW with wins over Wilkes-Barre Coughlin (54-13) and Wyoming Area (62-57) Monday night.  Markowski had a 2-game total of 34 points while Hopkins added 18 in the win over the Lady Warriors.  After starting division play 0-3, Dallas has strung together three wins to even their mark at 3-3.  First, they got a 48-21 win over Coughlin as Olivia Johnson scored 9.  The Lady Mounts then rallied in the second half to secure a 53-50 win over Hazleton Area as Maddie Kelley netted 23 and Sara  Lojewski added 15.  (Kendra Pfeil had 14 for the Lady Cougars).  Monday night, Kelley scored 21 as Dallas topped Tunkhannock 77-39.  In non-league action, Wyoming Valley West defeated Williamsport 61-46 on Saturday afternoon.  On Thursday, crossover games dot the schedule highlighted by WVW hosting Wyoming Area and Pittston Area entertaining Nanticoke Area.  Next Monday, more crossovers are tap.
