Hazleton Area (6-0) and Crestwood (6-1) both won their pair of games last week and moved out to the lead in Division 1 as crossover play got underway against Division 2.  The Cougars, who only led 48-47 entering the final period, eventually pulled away from Wilkes-Barre GAR late to secure a hard-fought 65-58 win over the Grenadiers.  HA placed four players in doubles as Joey Grula led the way with 17 (Josh Samec 14, Jeff Planutis 13, and Da’Mir Faison 12).  Mike Joseph’s squad then traveled to Tunkhannock Friday night and came away with an 85-44 victory.  The Cougars bolted out to a commanding 33-8 advantage through the first stanza as they got 18 from Samec, 13 from Planutis, 11 from Aaron Kellmer, and 10 from Faison.  Crestwood continues to play extremely well, winning their fourth straight after their loss to Hazleton Area.  The Comets defeated a pair of highly-regarded opponents in getting a win over previously undefeated Wyoming Area (41-34) and also Wilkes-Barre Meyers (40-35).  They rallied from a 28-23 deficit against the Warriors as Kyle Richards (15 points) and Noah Jackson (12) led the way.  Against Meyers, Crestwood held a 21-10 lead at the break and 29-19 heading in the final quarter before the Mohawks cut the gap to a single point (36-35) with 90 ticks left.  Kyle Richards hit 17 points in the win.  Dallas and Pittston Area each split their pair of games.  The Mountaineers got 15 points from Jay Bittner as they rolled over Tunkhannock 58-27.  They then dropped a 50-47 loss to Wilkes-Barre GAR as the Grenadiers rallied from a 36-32 deficit heading into the final period.  Bittner paced Dallas with 19 while Joe Parsons added 14.  Pittston Area jumped out to a 42-26 lead against unbeaten Berwick and handed the Bulldogs their first loss, 74-60.  Alex McAndrew netted 16 while Chris Klein added 14.  The Patriots then lost to Nanticoke Area 49-31 as Pat Mitchell scored 11.  Their top scorer on the season, McAndrew (12 ppg), left the game with an injury.  Both Wyoming Valley West and Wilkes-Barre Coughlin finished the week 0-2 through crossover play.  Valley West’s rally fell short in a 75-65 loss to Wilkes-Barre Meyers as the Spartans got 4 players into doubles (Draig Ruff 16, Noah Frace 14, Savion Saunders 13, and Aaron Austin 12).  Then, Friday night at Wyoming Area, WVW again surged back from a deficit (trailing 38-24) but came up just short to the Warriors, 46-44.  In the loss Ruff and Austin combined for 26 points.  Coughlin dropped a 63-35 loss to Nanticoke Area and then got 16 points from Melvin Robinson in a 46-34 loss to Berwick.  There are several key games involving the division leaders this week.  On Wednesday, Hazleton Area travels to play at Pittston Area and Dallas hosts Wyoming Area in makeup games.  On Friday, Hazleton travels to Berwick, Crestwood heads to play Nanticoke, and Dallas is at Meyers.  Next Tuesday, Crestwood hosts GAR while Hazleton entertains Meyers in a pair of sensational crossover tilts.

It was a busy and exciting week throughout Division 2 which also included several weather-related makeup games.  When the dust settled, five teams found themselves in a tie for first place at 7-1 and a pair of previously unbeaten teams (Berwick and Wyoming Area) had suffered their first loss on the season.  Berwick found themselves in a deep hole at the break trailing 42-26 to Pittston Area as the Bulldogs got 19 from Alec Markle but dropped a 74-60 loss to the Pats.  The Dawgs them bounced back for wins over Lake-Lehman (50-29) and Wilkes-Barre Coughlin (46-34).  Matt Champ led the way with 15 while Jude Goddard and Ken Marshman combined for 21 in the win over the Black Knights.  In the win over the Crusaders, Goddard, Champ, and Damon Beckhorn teamed up for 34 of their 46 points.  Wyoming Area finished the week 2-1, first getting 13 from Sam Greenfield and 10 from Tony Saitta, but Crestwood rallied for the 41-34 victory.  The Warriors then doubled-up MMI Prep 80-40 as they got 18 from Saitta, 17 from Greenfield, and 14 from Kyre Zielinski.  On Friday evening, WA almost allowed a seemingly-comfortable 38-24 lead slip away in the closing moments before defeating Wyoming Valley West, 46-44, as Greenfield (15), Matt Wright (12), and Zielinski (10) led the way.  Nanticoke Area won both of their games last week, 63-27 over Wilkes-Barre Coughlin and 39-31 over Pittston Area.  Cody Piestrak had a 2-game total of 28 points in those wins while Luke Butczynski added 10 against the Crusaders.  Both Wilkes-Barre Meyers and GAR finished the week 2-1, although each gave Division 1 front-runners a tough challenge.  Meyers rolled out to a big lead (45-26) and held off a WVW rally to defeat the Spartans 75-65 as four players reached doubles (Juwane Buckner 21, Matt Dessoye 14, Levaugn Soules 13, Omar Kelly 12).  The Mohawks then topped Hanover Area 72-33 as Ryan Gilgallon and Buckner each netted 15 while Soules and Robbie Formola combined for 22.  Friday night, Meyers nearly snagged a victory away from Crestwood, but dropped a close 40-35 loss as Soules, Buckner, and Gilgallon teamed up for 33 of their 35 points.  Wilkes-Barre GAR rallied and battled back against Hazleton Area before losing a hard-fought 65-58 loss to the Cougars.  Will Johnson hit 20, Herman Suazo and Andrew Campbell each had 13, and Keyshawn Palmer added a dozen for the Grenadiers.  GAR then led Northwest Area through the break before the Rangers used a 24-10 run to climb back into the game before the Grenadiers prevailed for a 63-48 win, getting 21 from Palmer and 17 from Johnson.  GAR then rallied again late, this time against Dallas (trailing 36-32) to get a 50-47 win over the Mounts as Campbell (13) and Palmer (13) led the way.  Tunkhannock completed the week going 1-2.  Sean Harder netted 8 points in their 58-27 loss to Dallas.  Tyler Faux (13 points) then led four players in doubles (Matt Goodwin 11, Harder 10, and Evan Turner 10) as the Tigers rallied for a 44-43 win over Wyoming Seminary.  Tunk also dropped a home 85-44 loss to Division 1 powerhouse Hazleton Area.  The schedule is absolutely loaded with eye-catching crossover matchups.  On Wednesday, Dallas entertains Wyoming Area.  Friday Nanticoke hosts Crestwood, Hazleton visits Berwick, and Dallas is at Meyers.  Next Tuesday, GAR is at Crestwood, Meyers at Hazleton, and Wyoming Area is at Pittston Area.

Division 3 finally got down to some intra-division matchups, although several crossover makeup games did sneak in the schedule mid-week.  On Friday night, Wyoming Seminary held Holy Redeemer to just four points through the first half and then hung on to defeat the Royals 42-36 as the Blue Knights got 13 points from Dimitri Gnall and 12 from Jeremy Callahan.  In the loss, HR got a combined 25 points from James Kosik and Collin Cook.  That win brought the division race to within a one game separation.  Earlier in the week, Sem got 17 from Nick Ganter and 19 from Gnall as they defeated Northwest Area, 48-31.  The Rangers got 12 apiece from Sam Saxe and Jackson Yaple.  In a crossover tilt, Wyoming Seminary led Tunkhannock 24-19 at the break, but the Tigers rallied for key a 44-43 win.  Gnall netted 14 in the loss for Sem.  Holy Redeemer began their week with a 54-32 victory over MMI Prep as both Collin Cook and Nick Prociak scored 15 points (Kyle Williams had 15 for the Preppers).  Northwest Area, Hanover Area, and Lake-Lehman all notched their first division win last week.  The Hawks were blanked through the first 8 minutes, but turned things around to defeat Lake-Lehman 51-43 as Mike Piscotty led Hanover with 15 while Luis Rivera and Evan Materna combined to score 22.  Lake-Lehman got 21 points from Cole Spencer and 10 from Tyler Scharff.  Following a 72-33 crossover defeat to Meyers in which Piscotty netted 16, Hanover Area also lost to Northwest Area, 50-45 as Piscotty hit 19.  The Rangers, who trailed 16-7 after the first quarter, got 16 from Yaple and 14 from Saxe.  Saxe (17) and Yaple (17) also came up big in a crossover loss to GAR 63-48.  After losing to Berwick 50-29, Lake-Lehman rebounded to defeat MMI Prep, 54-49.  Cole Spencer had a 2-game total of 36 points.  The Preppers also dropped an 80-40 crossover loss to Wyoming Area, but they came away with solid 2-game efforts from Matt Marchetti (22 points) and Kyle Williams (28 points).  Coming up this week, on Tuesday, Holy Redeemer hosts Hanover Area.  On Friday, the Royals entertain Northwest Area.  And next Tuesday, Wyoming Seminary travels to play Hanover Area.

Scranton Prep remained perfect and atop Division 1 following crossover wins over North Pocono and Wallenpaupack.  Friday night, Abington Heights stayed within a game of the lead with a big win over Scranton.  And Scranton got a critical win on Saturday night over their crosstown, city rival to stay within two games of the top spot.  Prep got 21 points (on 7 triples) from Nick Dende and 12 each from Logan Bailey and Paddy Casey as the Cavaliers used a 34-16 third period run to defeat North Pocono, 77-40.  The Cavs then streaked out to a 23-2 advantage and rolled over Paupack, 73-40, getting 18 from Dende, 13 from Leo O’Boyle, and 11 from Wes Simons.  Abington Heights had back-to-back games on Thursday and Friday.  First, they got an 86-46 crossover win over Honesdale as Trey Koehler (22 with 4 treys), Jackson Danzig (20), Seth Maxwell (15), and Lucas Goodman (10) all reached doubles.  The Comets then used a 28-14 edge across the middle periods to get a 51-39 win over Scranton as George Tinsley (18) and Maxwell (12) paved the way.  Robbie McAndrew and Matt Hart combined for25 for the Knights.  Sandwiched around that loss to AH, Scranton came away with solid wins over Delaware Valley (59-28) and West Scranton (54-41).  Hart, McAndrew, and Ky’Ron Harbin combined for 34 in the win over the Warriors.  In the rivalry against West side (held at Marywood University), the Knights rallied from a 19-7 deficit to go on a 27-5 run as they got 21 from Harbin and 16 from Nasir Cunningham.  Matt Williams netted 9 for the Invaders.  The loss dropped West even at 3-3 following wins over Valley View and North Pocono.  The Invaders jumped out to a 16-9 lead and got a memorable night from Cole Stetzar (32 points including career #1,000).  DaShawn Minnick added 10 in the win while Valley View got 12 each from Bobby Craig and Dylan Howanitz.  West Scranton then got 15 from Stetzar as they got a crossover 35-18 win over North Pocono.  And Valley View picked up their second division victory with a pulsating, come-from-behind overtime 66-63 win over Western Wayne.  The Cougars, who trailed 16-4 early and 63-58 in OT, got 17 points (with 3 triples) from Craig, 12 each from Brian Durkin and Janaasah Boone, plus 21 combined from Marc Kudrich and Jaden Duplessis.  Plenty of great games on the schedule this week.  On Wednesday, Scranton visits North Pocono.  On Friday, Scranton Prep hosts West Side.  Saturday features a terrific crossover game as West Scranton travels to Delaware Valley.  Next Tuesday features the rematch between Abington Heights and Scranton Prep on the Cavaliers home floor.

Delaware Valley split a pair of games, including a 59-35 win over Honesdale which gave the Warriors a one-game lead in Division 2 as four players reached doubles (Trevor Smith 17, Blake Gearhart 14, Shano Acoveno 12, and Tyler Smith 10).  But, the biggest news in the division has got to be the 44-35 win for Western Wayne over Wallenpaupack.  The win marked the first division win for the Wildcats in 84 games.  Zachary Rovinsky netted 19 points in the win while Alex Pillar hit 11 for Paupack.  The Wildcats nearly made it two wins in a row in a crossover matchup against Valley View.  WW led 42-40 after three quarters and 63-58 in overtime before the Cougars would rally for the win.  Dahlton Frisbie (29 points with 5 triples) led the way while Rovinsky added 15 and Luke Pike 12.  Honesdale dropped to 3-3 following their 86-46 loss to Abington Heights as Anthony DeGori netted 19 points.  North Pocono also dropped a pair of crossover games, 77-40 to Scranton Prep and 35-18 to West Scranton as Chris McLafferty had a 2-game total of 17 points.  And Mitch Guerrieri scored 17 points for Wallenpaupack, but the Buckhorns lost to Scranton Prep, 73-40.  In non-league action, Honesdale got 10 points from Joey Scarfalloto but the Hornets lost to East Stroudsburg South, 57-31.  Coming up this week, on Wednesday, North Pocono entertains Scranton.  On Friday, Honesdale travels to North Pocono.  Saturday, Delaware Valley hosts West Scranton in a key crossover tilt.  And next Tuesday, Delaware Valley visits Valley View.

Dunmore stayed perfect in Division 3 first half play following their 44-43 win over Holy Cross.  The Bucks withstood several Crusader charges getting 17 points from Michael Dougherty.  Holy Cross, who only converted 7 of 15 free throws, got 24 combined points from Malachi Phillips and Tyler Mozeleski.  Dunmore also added division wins over Carbondale and Riverside.  Against the Chargers, the Bucks used a 23-7 run in the second period to move ahead.  Dougherty teamed up with Nick Maldonato as they each netted 18 points in the 65-51 victory.  Giovanni Mustica scored 17 points for Carbondale.  Against Riverside, the Bucks rallied from a deficit entering the final period to force overtime.  They eventually prevailed for a 61-60 win as they placed four in doubles (Colin Holmes 17, Dougherty 16, John Mandarano 13, and Maldonato 10).  Evan Carrubba hit 22 for the Vikes while Marco Echeverria and Bill Nash combined for 25 points.  Holy Cross rebounded with a 58-31 win over Old Forge as they got 21 from Tom Montefour and 12 each from Phillips and Kieran Burrier.  Mid Valley picked up their third division win with a 60-29 win over Lakeland.  The Spartans got 14 from Brad Kalinowski, 12 from RJ Gouldsbury, and 10 from Brendan Davies.  Jake Curnow led the Chiefs with 20.  Riverside rallied in the second half to defeat their top rival, Old Forge, picking up their second division win.  Nash scored 13, Jason Holman 16 (with 4 triples), and Carrubba with 15 in the 59-49 win.  The Blue Devils got 15 from Kevin Walsh, 14 from Ben Grochowksi and 10 from Joey Verespey.  And Carbondale got a first half victory, 69-37 over Lakeland.  The Chargers got 12 each from Bobby Salitsky and Andrew Manarchuck plus 10 each from Mustica and Evan Dearie.  Curnow had another great effort for Lakeland scoring 17 points.  In a crossover game, Noah Tanner hit 26 and Gouldsbury added 12 as Mid Valley doubled-up Mountain View, 50-25.  And in non-league action, Evan Dearie led four players in doubles with 16 (Manarchuck 14, Mike Zazzera 12, and Mustica 10) in a 79-11 win over Forest City.  On Wednesday, Mid Valley hosts Dunmore in a key matchup.  First half play concludes on Thursday as Old Forge hosts Mid Valley, Holy Cross entertains Carbondale, and Lakeland travels to Dunmore.

Division 4 could be headed for a pivotal game Thursday night as Blue Ridge looks to get back into the first half race when they visit co-division leader Mountain View.  Last week Elk Lake got by Susquehanna 47-41 before losing a close game to Blue Ridge 57-55.  Reirdan Reyan netted 17 and Ben Woolcock added 11 for the Warriors in their win over Susquehanna.  The Sabers got 24 combined points from Eric Lee and Garret Grausgruber.  In their loss to the Raiders, Reyan hit 19 along with Griffin Bunnell while Woolcock added 13.  Blue Ridge got 20 from Jeff Morris and 15 from Sam Cosmello.  Earlier in the week, Blue Ridge got a 44-25 win over Lackawanna Trail as Jeff Morris scored 16.  And then in one of the bigger upsets of the entire season, Forest City came away with a 47-44 win over Blue Ridge as the Foresters got 22 points from Kolby Rotella and 20 from Dakota Knehr-Cook.  Blue Ridge, who fought back from a 10-point first half deficit, got 13 points from Jared Mills.  Mountain View maintained a share of first place after their 49-41 win over Montrose as Matt Lavin hit 20 points.  Brennan Gilhool added 10 for the Meteors.  Lackawanna Trail evened their mark at 2-2 with a 54-48 win over Susquehanna.  Shawn Jones scored 17 for the Lions while John Maier and Travis Ankoff each contributed 11.  The Sabers, who converted 25 of 29 free throws, got 19 from Mason Deakin and 13 from Grausgruber.  In a crossover game, Mt. View got 3 triples from Kyle Streich, but dropped a 50-25 loss to Mid valley.  And in non-league play, Reyan netted 23 and Woolcock 14 as Elk Lake defeated Towanda, 61-35.  First half play concludes Thursday with a pair of big games, Lackawanna Trail at Elk Lake and Blue Ridge visiting Mountain View.

 

 

 

 

BOYS LLHOOPS PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

 

Kyle Richards (6-4 senior forward) helped lead Crestwood to their 4th straight victory.  He netted 17 points and connected on 3 triples as the Comets defeated Wilkes-Barre Meyers, 40-35.  The senior forward then scored 15 points, including 2 treys, in a 41-34 win over previously undefeated Wyoming Area.

 

Michael Dougherty (5-10 senior guard) has Dunmore on a six-game winning streak.  Last week, he scored 18 points in a 65-51 win over Carbondale.  Then, in a battle against cross-borough rival Holy Cross, the senior guard netted 17 points as the Bucks nipped the Crusaders, 44-43.  On Friday night, Dougherty contributed 16 points as Dunmore rallied for a 61-60 overtime road win over Riverside.  Over the three game span, he connected on 7 triples.

Wyoming Valley West continues to lead the Division 1 race following crossover wins over Lake-Lehman and Wyoming Area last week.  Pittston Area dropped into a tie with surging Crestwood following their loss to Nanticoke Area.  WVW got 21 points from Erin Gibbons in their 52-37 victory over Lake-Lehman.  Gibbons again led the way as the Lady Spartans pulled away in the second half for a 57-44 win over Wyoming Area.  Colleen Cwalina and Gabby Smicherko combined for 24.  Pittston Area started their week with a 50-38 win over Berwick as the Lady Patriots (who trailed at the break, 28-26) got 28 points from Kirsten Durling and 11 from Alexa Noone.  Against Nanticoke, the Lady Pats bumped into a defensive juggernaut as the Trojanettes forced 23 turnovers (with 16 steals) in a 72-40 loss.  PA, who led after the first period 12-11, got another solid effort from Leah Hodick (12 points).  Crestwood continues to impress as the Lady Comets defeated Wyoming Area and Lake-Lehman.  In their 43-39 win over the Lady Warriors, they rallied from a four-point deficit entering the final quarter, getting 18 each from Julia Makowski and Sarah Hopkins.  That same duo then teamed up for 26 points as Crestwood got by Lake-Lehman 52-36.  Dallas and Hazleton Area both split their pair of games last week.  The Lady Mountaineers got out to a quick start and rolled over Tunkhannock as they got 27 points from Maddie Kelly plus 14 each from Sarah Lojewski and Lauren Charlton.  Dallas then played Holy Redeemer close through the break before dropping a 61-46 game to the Lady Royals.  Lojewski (17) and Kelley (16) led the way for the Lady Mounts.  Hazleton Area also lost to Holy Redeemer, 73-54 as got 21 points from Marissa Trivelpiece and 10 from Megan Trivelpiece.  The Lady Cougars bounced back for a 62-23 victory over Tunkhannock as Maddie Mrochko hit 22 (with 6 triples), Kendra Pfeil 17, and Marissa Trivelpiece 11.  Wilkes-Barre Coughlin is still looking for their first win of the season following losses to Nanticoke Area and Berwick.  And in non-league action, Pittston Area got 16 from Taryn Ashby plus a combined 32 points from Durling, Noone, and Hodick as the Lady Patriots doubled-up Forest City, 60-30.  Mother nature has certainly played havoc with this week’s schedule.  On Wednesday, Dallas visits Wyoming Area in a key game.  Thursday is highlighted by WVW hosting Holy Redeemer.  Saturday features Hazleton Area visiting Nanticoke Area.  Next Monday has a three premier tilts on tap as Wyoming Area hosts rival Pittston Area, Crestwood travels to Holy Redeemer, and WVW visits Nanticoke Area.

Nanticoke Area and Holy Redeemer both went 2-0 in crossover play last week and remained in a tie for the lead in Division 2.  The Trojanettes rolled to a 33-0 lead after one period before settling for a 77-16 win over Wilkes-Barre Coughlin.  They got 26 points from Kayla Aufiero and 18 from Riley Klepadlo.  Aufiero and Klepadlo then led the way with 19 and 14 points respectively, while Lisa Rasziak and Alexis Pyzia combined for 24 in a 72-40 victory over Pittston Area.  The win showcased GNA’s incredibly effective and relentless, swarming defense which created 23 turnovers.  Holy Redeemer got a 73-54 win over Hazleton Area as the Royals got 17 from Sam Rajza (with 3 triples) and 15 from Samantha Yencha.  The Royals then pulled away in the second half (after leading at the break 31-28) for a 61-46 win over Dallas.  Yencha netted 16, Maya Kornfeld 13, and Irelyn Januzzi 10.  Berwick dropped a game off the pace following a 50-38 loss to Pittston Area as Reese Mensinger scored 15.  The Lady Dawgs rebounded as Mensinger hit 23 in their 53-15 win over Wilkes-Barre Coughlin.  Wyoming Area dropped a pair of games last week, but both were to some of the stronger Division 1 squads.  Sarah Holweg hit 27 and Madison Orzel 10 as the Lady Warriors saw Crestwood rally in the final stanza for a 62-57 win.  Holweg and Katie Wolfgang then each hit a dozen points in a 57-44 loss to Wyoming Valley West.  WA got back on the winning track as they withstood a rally by Hanover Area to secure a 57-52 win as Holweg netted her career 1,000th point (26 in the game) and Wolfgang added 12.  The Lady Warriors are in a tie with Lake-Lehman who lost a pair of games last week to Valley West and Crestwood.  Madison Borum netted 17 in their 52-37 loss to WVW and Sarah Salus and Janelle Cawley each hit 9 in their 52-36 loss to the Lady Comets.  Tunkhannock also dropped a pair of games to Dallas and Hazleton Area, but the Lady Tigers got a great 2-game effort from Rebecca Avery with 26 points.  Abby Ritz also hit 13 in the loss to Dallas.  In non-league play, Holy Redeemer traveled to Boyertown for the AFBE (Athletes for Better Education) Shootout.  The got 22 from Rajza, 15 from Talia Kozierowski, and 13 from Januzzi in the 69-59 win over Berks Catholic (who got 24 points from Taylor Blunt).  And Tunkhannock got 16 from Avery, 13 from Sydney Faux, and 12 from Ritz in a 59-46 win over Wilkes-Barre GAR.  Coming up on Thursday, Holy Redeemer travels to WVW while Nanticoke visits Crestwood.  On Saturday, Nanticoke will host Hazleton Area.  Next Monday, crossover action continues with several terrific games on the schedule.

Northwest Area moved out to a two-game lead in Division 3 play following their wins over Wyoming Seminary and Hanover Area.  The Lady Rangers took an 11-point halftime lead and defeated the Lady Knights 48-37 as Brenna Babcock netted 27 points.  Alex Wesneski had 15 for Sem in the loss.  Babcock then scored 24 and Hannah Wisniewski added 13 as Northwest rallied in the second half for a 60-55 victory over Hanover Area.  The Lady Hawks got 23 points from Victoria Benning and 11 each from Madison Hooper and Genesis Rodriguez.  Wilkes-Barre Meyers won their game last week, 64-49 over Wyoming Seminary as Giana Skaff hit 21 points (with 4 treys), Sarah Bottger 16, and Eric Morris 13.  Sem got another great effort from Wesneski (18) while Annemaakie Reitsma and Ally Vezendy combined for 25.  Hanover Area picked up a 66-51 win over Wilkes-Barre GAR as Rodriguez scored 16 and Hooper 15.  The Lady Grenadiers got 16 from Khira Cook and 15 from Alexis Whiting.  Hanover finished their week with a makeup crossover game against Wyoming Area.  The Lady Hawks got 23 from Rodriguez and 17 from Benning, but came up just short to the Lady Warriors, 57-52.  There were also three non-league games involving Division 3 teams.  GAR got 17 from Cook and 12 from Whiting in a 59-46 loss to Tunkhannock.  Wyoming Seminary got 11 each from Wesneski and Vezendy in a 44-14 victory over Lackawanna Trail.  And Wisniewski hit 20 and Babcock added 15 in Northwest’s 64-38 win over Millville.  On Thursday, Northwest Area hosts Wilkes-Barre Meyers.  On Saturday, Meyers visits Hanover Area.  And next Monday, the Lady Mohawks entertain city rival GAR.

Both Scranton and West Scranton won their pair of games last week as the Lady Invaders remained a game behind the Lady Knights in Division 1.  Scranton got a career high from Ciaira Loyd with 37 points (with 5 triples) as they defeated Delaware Valley in a crossover matchup, 63-31.  Loyd then netted 13 and Colette Mulderig added 10 as Scranton edged Abington Heights, 40-37.  Gracie Evans scored 9 for the Lady Comets.  West Scranton got 19 from Destiny Jefferson and another stellar effort from Tatum Repshis (13 points with 3 treys) in a 45-27 victory over Valley View.  Jefferson then led the way with 19 while Repshis hit 18 as the Lady Invaders got a big crossover win over Division 2 front-runner North Pocono, 55-47.  Earlier in the week, Abington Heights got 21 from Hannah Kowalski and 13 from Olivia Baker as the Lady Comets topped Honesdale 60-31 in a crossover tilt.  Scranton Prep split their pair of games.  First, in a crossover game, North Pocono rallied from a 20-3 deficit to defeat the Classics as Prep got 11 points from Katherine Dzwonczyk.  Prep then rebounded for a 29-28 win over Wallenpaupack as Dzwonczyk netted 9.  Valley View dropped both of their games.  The Lady Cougars got 10 points from Quinn Kelley in a 43-37 loss to Western Wayne.  On Thursday, West Scranton visits Scranton Prep and Abington Heights travels to Wallenpaupack.  On Saturday, Scranton hosts North Pocono.  And next Monday, Abington Heights hosts Scranton Prep while Scranton entertains Wallenpaupack.

The top four teams in Division 2 all split their pair of games last week.  North Pocono rallied from a 17-point first half deficit to defeat Scranton Prep in a crossover game, 43-35 as the Lady Trojans got 14 points from Sarah Kaneski and 13 from Jenna Montana.  They then battled West Scranton throughout the second half, but came up short (55-47) as Chloe Pehanick netted 20.  Paupack held on for a 36-33 win over Western Wayne as Rachel Tirjan hit 16 points (including 4 triples).  The Lady Wildcats, who trailed by 15 (33-18) heading into the final stanza, got 13 points from Hannah Roedel.  Hannah Smith then contributed a dozen points, but the Lady Buckhorns came up just short against Scranton Prep, 29-28.  Western Wayne rebounded from their loss to Paupack with a 43-37 crossover win over Valley View as Gracie Guarino scored 18 and Jess Berger added 10.  The Lady Cats hit 17 of 23 free throws in that victory.  Honesdale got 11 from Caroline Tuman in a 60-31 loss to Abington Heights, but the Lady Hornets bounced back with a 38-30 win over Delaware Valley as Corinne Casazza (13) and Emily Theobald (12) led the way.  Stephanie O’Grady netted 15 points (with 4 treys) for Del-Val in the loss.  The Lady Warriors also got 10 from Hannah Gallagher in a 63-31 crossover loss to Scranton.  In non-league action, Wallenpaupack got 14 points from Olivia Gregory and led at the break 28-22, but dropped a 52-35 loss to Bethlehem Freedom.  Coming up this week, on Thursday, Wallenpaupack hosts Abington Heights.  Saturday features North Pocono traveling to Scranton for a terrific crossover matchup of division front-runners.  And, next Monday, North Pocono entertains Western Wayne while Scranton hosts Wallenpaupack.

Dunmore remained perfect on the season and moved to 4-0 in Division 3 play.  The Lady Bucks can wrap up first half honors with wins at Lakeland (Wednesday) and at home Friday against Mid Valley.  Holy Cross travels to Carbondale on Wednesday.  Last week, Dunmore came away with impressive victories over Holy Cross and Riverside.  In the 61-45 win over Holy Cross, Maddie Martin hit 20 Gianna Delfino 15, and Victoria Toomey added 10.  The Lady Crusaders got 23 from Abby Anderson.  Against Riverside, the Lady Bucks got off to a quick 17-7 start and rolled to a 61-40 win as Toomey netted 17, Delfino 13, while Martin and Lisa Tallo each added 11.  Lizzie Spindler hit 16 in the loss for the Lady Vikings.  Holy Cross rebounded from their loss to Dunmore with a 55-25 win over Old Forge as they got 17 from Lexi Walsh and 23 combined from Anderson and Abby Sempa.  Riverside pulled away in the second half to defeat top rival Old Forge, 56-46, as Jess Millan scored 17 and Spindler added 15.  The Lady Devils got 16 (including 4 treys) from Lindsey Welsh and 11 from Jen Regan.  Carbondale picked up a 49-41 win over Lakeland as the Chargerettes got 17 points from Mikenna Walsh and a dozen from Anna Totsky.  Brooke Estadt netted 21 points (with 4 triples) for the Lady Chiefs.  Lakeland rebounded with a big first half (26-13) and went on to defeat Mid Valley 45-32 as they got 15 from Estadt.  Kiana Williams contributed 11 for the Spartanettes.  In crossover action, Anielly Holt hit 14 and Erica Haefele 13 as Mid Valley topped Mountain View 50-36.  And Carbondale jumped out to a 21-10 lead and got 24 combined points from Walsh and Amelia Zazzera.  In an interesting crossover tilt (which does not count in division standings), Holy Cross travels to play Blue Ridge on Friday.  Second half play gets underway next Monday.

It could be an exciting conclusion to first half play in Division 4.  Wednesday night front-runner Forest City visits Susquehanna before wrapping up at Elk Lake on Thursday.  The Lady Foresters got 20 points from Kendra Bendyk in a 46-26 win over Montrose (Annalise Ely hit 10 for the Lady Meteors).  Forest City then got a big 17-0 run in the third quarter to defeat Blue Ridge, 51-44.  Mackenzie Hartman netted 27 points (and grabbed 10 boards) and Bendyk added 11 points in the win.  The Lady Raiders got 14 from Isabella Cosmello and 11 each form Kaylnne Myers and Abby Hartman.  Susquehanna remained a game back with wins over Elk Lake and Lackawanna Trail.  In their win over the Lady Warriors, Taylor Huyck scored 17, Mackenzie Steele 15, and Lauren Soden 11.  Justine Johns netted 15 for Elk Lake.  The Lady Sabers then got 15 from Huyck, 13 from Steele, and 15 from Bethany Maby in their 48-34 victory over Trail.  Laurelann Penn scored 9 points for the Lady Lions.  Blue Ridge also picked up a win over LT (55-33) as they got 26 from Cosmello (her career 1,000th) and 17 from Hartman.  Elsewhere, Montrose only converted 5 of 14 free throws but it was enough for the Lady Meteors to edge Mountain View, 33-30, as Andre Harper scored 9.  Erika Freely scored 15 for the Lady Eagles.  In crossover action, Freely netted 14 and Sydney Newhart added 10 as Mt. View came up short to Mid Valley, 50-36.  And, Elk Lake got 10 each from Rose Warner and Whitney Tyler in a 54-36 crossover loss to Carbondale.  Second half play gets underway next Monday.                     

 

 

 

 

GIRLS LLHOOPS PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

 

Sarah Holweg (5-6 junior guard) delivered several strong performances for Wyoming Area last week.  She scored 27 points (including 4 treys) in a 62-57 loss against surging Division 1 contender Crestwood.  The junior guard then netted a dozen in a 57-44 defeat to highly-regarded Wyoming Valley West.  She finished her week by hitting 26 points (with 4 triples) and reaching career point #1,000 in a 57-52 victory over Hanover Area.

 

Destiny Jefferson (5-7 senior guard) has West Scranton on a four-game winning streak.  She scored 19 points as the Lady Invaders defeated Valley View, 45-27.  The senior guard then netted 19 more as West Side downed Division 2 frontrunner North Pocono, 55-47.
