Last week in Division 3, Mid Valley defeated Dunmore creating a 3-way tie atop the standings.  After all three of the front-runners won their final game of first half play, special weekend playoff matchups were needed to clear things up.  Holy Cross topped Dunmore in Playoff #1 on Saturday and Mid Valley then defeated the Crusaders Sunday afternoon in Playoff #2 to grab first half honors.  That’s the quick overview, here’s how it all played out.  Earlier in the week, Dunmore rallied in the final period against Mid Valley to erase a double-digit deficit and make it a one possession game, but the Spartans regrouped and prevailed with a 52-49 victory as they got high scoring from RJ Gouldsbury (18 points) and JJ Glinsky (17 points).  The Bucks, who held Brad Kalinowski and Noah Tanner mostly in check, got 17 from John Mandarano and 11 from Conor Walsh.  On the final night of first half play, MV used a 20-10 run through the second quarter to gain a 54-44 win over Old Forge.  Gouldsbury netted 17 and Brendan Davies 13 in the win while the Blue Devils got 19 from Joey Verespey and 15 from Ben Grochowski.  Holy Cross pulled away in the second half to get a 52-41 win over Carbondale as Malachi Phillips (16 points) and Kieran Burrier (12) led the Crusaders to a share of first place.  Bobby Salitsky netted 14 for the Chargers.  And Dunmore bounced back from their loss to Mid Valley to also secure a share of first place with a 58-41 win over Lakeland.  The Bucks got 13 from Conor Walsh, 12 from Nick Maldonato, and 10 from Daniel Walsh.  Jake Curnow hit 14 for the Chiefs in the loss.  In Saturday’s playoff matchup between Dunmore and Holy Cross, the Crusaders found success the third time playing the Bucks this year with a 62-51 victory.  Holy Cross stormed out to a 20-8 lead and placed four players into doubles (Phillips 16, Patrick Galvin 15, Matt Nelson 13, and Tom Montefour 11).  Dunmore got 14 from Conor Walsh and 13 from Mandarano.  That set up Sunday’s first half deciding game at Scranton HS between Holy Cross and Mid Valley.  After playing to a 9-9 tie after the first period, the Spartans used a 34-12 advantage through the second and fourth stanzas to roll to a 58-38 victory.  Noah Tanner led MV with 20, Glinsky had 12, Kalinowski 12, and Gouldsbury 10.  The Crusaders got combined 24 points from Phillips and Galvin.  In other action, both Old Forge and Carbondale picked up their second division win last week.  Grochowski netted 28 and Kevin Welsh 12 as the Blue Devils topped Lakeland 56-37.  And Carbondale jumped out to a 17-6 lead and place four into doubles (Salitsky 17, Pat Durkin 12 on 4 triples, Giovanni Mustica 10, and Evan Dearie 10) in a 56-31 win over Riverside.  In crossover action, Riverside rallied from a 15-5 deficit to notch a 58-50 win over Montrose as Bill Nash (22) and Evan Carrubba (12) led the way for the Vikings.  It’s a busy three-game week coming up.  On Tuesday, Mid Valley travels to play Carbondale.  On Thursday, the Spartans host Holy Cross.  Next Tuesday features rivalry games as Holy Cross entertains Dunmore and Old Forge hosts Riverside.

Susquehanna handed Forest City their initial division loss earlier last week.  And, after both teams finished at 5-1, a playoff game was needed on Saturday to award first half Division 3 honors.  In that matchup, the Lady Sabers withstood a big 23-11 Forest City rally and used their significant rebounding advantage to secure the 42-36 victory.  Taylor Huyck led the way with 16, Mackenzie Steele added 14, and Lauren Soden 11.  FC got 15 from Kendra Bendryk.  In their earlier matchup, Susquehanna also used some terrific rebounding and weathered a Lady Forester rally for a 47-43 win.  Soden hit 12 and Huyck 11.  FC got 18 from MacKenzie Hartman and 11 from Bendyk.  Both teams then won their next game to force a playoff.  Forest City found themselves in a 34-21 deficit in the third period but stormed back for a 53-49 win over Elk Lake.  Skylar Fortuner led the way with 17 while Bendyk and Caitlyn Bonham each hit 12.  Elk Lake got 25 combined from Keri Jones and Whitney Tyler.  Susquehanna got 17 from Huyck and 10 from Steele in a 42-30 win over Mountain View (who got 10 points from Erika Freely).  Elk Lake and Blue Ridge both finished just one game back in first half play.  The Lady Warriors got 15 from Keri Jones and 14 from Tyler as they got by Lackawanna Trail 49-32.  Lexie Kwaitkowski and Ally Decker teamed up for 21 points for the Lady Lions.  Blue Ridge rallied from a 35-30 deficit to get a 45-40 victory over Mountain View as Isabella Cosmello (18), Abby Hartman (23), and Kalynne Myers (12) led the Lady Raiders.  Mountain View got 21 combined points from Sydney Newhart and Erika Freely.  Montrose got their second win in the first half with a 41-38 overtime win over Trail.  The Lady Meteors got 15 from Radvile Vaiciulyte and 12 from Harper Andre.  The Lady Lions, who led 28-26 heading into the final stanza, got 14 from Kwaitkowski and 11 from Laurelann Penn.  In crossover play, Georgia Smith and Andre teamed up for 21 points, but Montrose dropped a 51-35 loss to Riverside.  Blue Ridge also lost to Holy Cross 56-33 as the Lady Raiders got 14 from Cosmello and 10 from Hartman.  And in non-league play, Keri Jones netted 20 and Abby Jones 14 in a 56-26 win over Wyalusing.  Second half play got underway Monday night with Forest City, Montrose and Elk Lake all getting wins.  Maggie Kowalewski scored 18 as Forest City topped Lackawanna Trail, 62-30.  Andre Harper netted 13 as Montrose defeated Blue Ridge 46-37.  And Justine Johns hit 14 in Elk Lake’s 44-32 win over Mountain View.  In a crossover game on Monday, first half winner Susquehanna got 14 from Mackenzie Steele, but the Lady Sabers came up short to Lakeland, 49-40.  On Wednesday, Blue Ridge hosts Elk Lake.  On Friday, the Lady Raiders travel to play Susquehanna.  And next Monday, Elk Lake entertains Susquehanna in a key matchup.
