In Division 1, Scranton Prep used a 14-0 run that extended into the final period to defeat rival Abington Heights, 53-43, and create a 2-game lead with three games remaining.  The Cavaliers trailed AH 34-30 late in the third stanza, but that’s when Prep’s offense caught fire and Abington went ice-cold.  Logan Bailey led the way for the Cavs with 19, Nick Dende hit 16, and Paddy Casey added 13.  The Comets got 14 points from Seth Maxwell, 12 of them coming in the first half.  Scranton Prep then placed five players in doubles (Brett Para 15, Casey 13, Dende 13, Wes Simons 12, and Bailey 11) in a 79-49 crossover victory over Valley View.  Brian Durkin and Marc Kudrich each scored a dozen points for the Cougars.  Abington Heights rebounded from their loss to Prep with a 70-34 win over North Pocono as Maxwell scored 17, George Tinsley 14, and Tom Rothenberger 11.  Scranton continues to play very well, getting wins over Wallenpaupack and West Scranton.  Ky’Ron Harbin scored 16 and Jacob Watts added 11 in their 62-36 crossover win over the Buckhorns.  Harbin then netted 23 as the Knights shook off a 5-5 tie after the first period to take a 25-16 lead at the break.  Matt Williams and Blake Carlton teamed up to scored 25 points for the Invaders in their 48-43 loss to city rival Scranton.  The loss evened West Side’s record at 5-5.  Earlier in the week, they got 25 points from Cole Stetzar in a 47-40 crossover win over Honesdale.  Elsewhere, in a 62-44 crossover loss to Delaware Valley, Valley View got 12 points from Durkin.  And, in a marquee non-league matchup, EPC 6A power Parkland used a 17-8 spurt through the second period to create some distance and eventually went on to a 79-71 win over Scranton Prep.  The Trojans hit 12 team triples and converted 15 of 17 free throws as American University Division 1 recruit Sam Iorio netted 34 points (with 4 triples).  Jake Bartholomew added 13 points (including 3 treys).  The Cavaliers got 18 from Bailey, 12 from Casey, and 12 from Dende (on 4 triples).  Coming up this week, on Tuesday, Scranton Prep hosts Scranton.  Friday features Abington Heights taking on West Scranton (to be played at Scranton HS) and Delaware Valley visiting Scranton Prep in a crossover game.

Wyoming Valley West took a giant step toward a possible Division 1 championship with their 61-56 road win over Hazleton Area Monday night.  Erin Gibbons had the hot hand scoring 24.  Kendra Pfeil netted 22 (with 5 triples) for the Lady Cougars who led at the break, 31-28.  The win gives WVW a 2-game lead with three to play.  Last week, Valley West handled the stifling Nanticoke press, got 42 from Gibbons, and handed the Trojanettes their first loss of the season, 80-71.  The Lady Spartans also got 16 from Gabby Smicherko and 11 from Colleen Cwalina.  WVW then got a 55-28 victory over Tunkhannock as Smicherko hit 20.  WVW finished their week by using a big third quarter (16-4) for a 50-36 win over Dallas.  Gibbons scored 19 and Cwalina added 12 for Valley West.  Lojewski had 11 for Dallas.  After Crestwood dropped a 66-55 crossover loss to Holy Redeemer last week, the Lady Comets came away with strong wins over Berwick, Pittston Area, and Dallas.  Julia Makowski continues to play extremely well.  She scored 17 and Sarah Hopkins added 12 in their loss to Holy Redeemer.  Makowski (19) and Hopkins (16) then led the way in a 51-35 win over Berwick (Andrea Shipton also added 10 in that win).  Crestwood then got 17 from Makowski and held off a Pittston rally to get a 44-38 win.  The Lady Patriots, who were without Kirsten Durling, got 25 from Taryn Ashby.  Monday night, Makowski netted 24 as the Lady Comets nipped Dallas, 49-48.  The Lady Mounts got 41 of their 48 points from Maddie Kelley, Lauren Charlton, and Sara Lojewski.  It was a tough week for Pittston Area, dropping games to Wyoming Area (61-55), Holy Redeemer (58-40), and Crestwood, but it sure ended with a high note Monday night as senior team manager/player, Ellie Bartoli, got to take the floor.  Bartoli, who has Downs Syndrome, made the most of her opportunity, scoring 10 points in a 67-33 win over Wilkes-Barre Coughlin.  Ashby led the way with 6 triples (40 points).  Durling netted 24 in PA’s loss to rival Wyoming Area earlier in the week.  And, in Pittston’s losses to WA and HR, Ashby and Leah Hodick had 2-game totals of 31 and 23 points.  Hazleton Area continues to play very well, running off wins over Lake-Lehman, Wyoming Area, and Wilkes-Barre Coughlin before their loss to Valley West Monday night.  Marissa Trivelpiece and Maddie Mrochko each had 14 points in their 59-41 win over Lake-Lehman.  Pfeil then netted 28, Mrochko 18, and Ma. Trivelpiece 10 in a 69-58 win over Wyoming Area.  Mrochko and Ma. Trivlepiece then teamed up for 25 in a 56-30 win over Wilkes-Barre Coughlin.  Dallas is sliding a bit within this very competitive division, losing four straight.  The Lady Mounts dropped crossovers to Berwick (48-49) and Nanticoke (51-41) getting a 2-game total of 29 from Lojewski, 11 from Hanna Johnson in the Berwick game and 10 from Kelley against Nanticoke.  Elsewhere, Coughlin got a 2-game total of 27 points from Claire Curtis in losses to Tunkhannock (56-31) and Lake-Lehman (44-21).  Emily Cicon had a dozen in the Lady Crusaders loss to Tunk.  On Thursday, Crestwood hosts Hazleton.  Next Monday, WVW entertains Crestwood and Pittston travels to Hazleton.  Play concludes next Wednesday, highlighted by Pittston hosting Valley West.
