SPECIAL UPDATE 12/17/09

HOLIDAY ON THE HARDWOOD (SUNDAY 12/20)

(Wachovia Arena, Exit 168 off Interstate 81)

Most local hoops fans probably do not realize that high school basketball was previously played on the hardwood of Wachovia Arena.  It was eight long years ago when a holiday tournament featuring local teams was held in the arena.  But, it seemed that the event was greeted with small crowds who seemed a bit more interested in the novelty of the whole thing.  Other than a college game sellout crowd of 8,200 in late December, 2005 matching Syracuse vs. Towson State (featuring hometown heroes Gerry McNamara and Tim Crossin), it has been more of a venue where great hockey, concert, and circus memories have been created.  But, sad to say, no high school hoops ones.  Hopefully, that will all change this Sunday when the arena hosts Holiday on the Hardwood, a quadruple-header featuring 5 local teams plus squads from New York, Washington DC, and the Lehigh Valley.  The Northeast Beat put together some information on the visiting teams and anticipates that most of the games will be extremely competitive and highly entertaining.

Admission is $7 for adults and $5 for students and valid for the entire day.  Hope to see you there!

Crestwood Comet vs. Wilkes-Barre GAR Grenadiers (noon)

Both teams are in a rebuilding mode this year, with GAR probably having the more uphill climb after losing their entire starting lineup from last season.  Crestwood does have a few players that saw significant playing time last season (Mike Abramcheck, John Lasko, Chris Vega).  Both feature excellent head coaches who have knack of getting their squads into the playoff hunt by the end of the season.  This should be a great start to the action.

Hazleton Cougars vs. St. Albans Bulldogs (2 pm)

Key tourney organizer Mike Joseph guides his Cougars against what may be the toughest opponent in the field.  But his team is playing with a ton of confidence after a successful start to their season in the Orlando Tip-Off and playing stingy defense in a road win over Whitehall Tuesday night.  Their opponent, St. Albans, is located in Washington DC and enrolls 565 boys in grades 4 through 12.  Their 3rd year head coach is Duane Simpkins, a 3-time team captain from the Maryland Terrapins in the early 90s.  His Bulldogs are off to a 4-1 start and they have already played a game in PA against the Haverford School.  They head to play 3 games in a shootout at Fordham University before visiting Wilkes-Barre Township.  St. Albans features a balanced lineup with Glen Thomas (6-6, 10.6 ppg) and Spencer Barks (11.6) being the top inside threats.  Outside they have 3-point shooter Christian Sbily (6-2, 4.2 ppg), 5-11 freshman Mike Sniezek (5.8 ppg), and Paul Zima (5.2 ppg).  Back in their lineup is Hakeem Harrison (6-0, 5.4 ppg) a real solid floor leader who recently returned from an injury.  This is an excellent test for the Silver and Red.

Holy Redeemer Royals vs. Bethlehem Freedom Patriots (4 pm)

Holy Redeemer has a deep perimeter game, some key role players and, of course, recent Penn State verbal recruit Peter Alexis (6-11 junior) in the middel.  The Royals go up against Bethlehem (1-1) who definitely impressed some observers by taking Allentown Allen to the wire before dropping a 1-point loss.  The Patriots feature four solid perimeter guards in Izel Dickerson (5-11 junior), Jon Payano (5-11 senior), Mike Prater (6-0 senior), and Jaleal Ragland (5-10 senior).  Prater scored 22 and Dickerson netted 18 in their loss to the Canaries.  Inside, they have some height in Greg Taylor (6-4 senior).  Freedom loves to run a fast-paced attacking offense, a style that should be interesting to watch against Alexis.

Holy Cross Crusaders vs. Binghamton Patriots (6 pm)

Holy Cross and Binghamton have played each other in the past, in the annual STOP DWI Holiday tourney in Binghamton, NY.  The Patriots (0-1) bring back 4 players from last year and gained a key transfer from a Class B New York state champion in 5-8 junior Greg Johnson.  Anchoring their starting lineup will be David Kellar (6-2 senior) and Kyle Lovett-Pitts (5-10 senior).  They have some height in 6-5 Eric Edwards and 6-4 senior Alex Johnson.  Additional backcourt help is expected to come from Seth Leon, Doran Parham, Paul Smith, and Walter Sampson.  Holy Cross needs to get balanced scoring.  Tough game for the Crusaders, but they have a ton of floor experience to rely upon.

UPDATED 12/15/09

Welcome back to the Northeast Beat.  It certainly was an interesting opening weekend of high school basketball across District 2.  Some early season rust was evident and sloppy play was the theme on many of the local hardwoods, though there were several teams that did impress and hit the court in mid-season rhythm.  Local head coaches will have the chance to get in a few more exhibition games before heading into the traditional holiday tournaments which are always a fan favorite.  The Beat is putting a schedule together for all teams competing in pre and post-Christmas tourneys and previews of the top tourney matchups will be posted next week.  It is a wonderful time to get out and see former athletes and coaches who are back in the area.

Speaking of column updates, the NEP Beat is typically updated every Tuesday and that should hold true throughout this season as well.  That being said, there is definitely a need to post key game wraps or pivotal District 2 news as soon as possible, so updates may occur during the week as well, especially as league play gets underway.  Sorry, the Beat does not Tweet, but hopefully still fills a worthwhile niche in local hoops coverage.

One of the best parts of the early season exhibition schedule is that there are several opportunities for fans to see matchups between Wyoming Valley Conference and Lackawanna League teams.  Some of the games feature teams from different classifications, so they truly deliver a unique game atmosphere.  On the boys side this week, Holy Cross takes on Pittston tonight before battling Holy Redeemer in a premier game in Wilkes-Barre Thursday.  Girls action features Holy Redeemer at Abington Heights Wednesday, Scranton Prep visiting Hazleton Thursday, Holy Redeemer at Dunmore on Saturday, and Wyoming Valley West traveling to play Scranton next Monday.  All of the top games through December 23 are listed below.  As always, boys action is listed first, scroll further down the page for girls coverage.

As in previous seasons, the Beat will continue to follow the Williamsport boys and girls squads through their independent (no league affiliation) schedules.  The Millionaire and Lady Millionaire both compete toward the state playoffs through the District 2/4 tournament in AAAA and so they are part of our coverage and also eligible to be in the District 2 Top 10 rankings (to be unveiled on January 3).  The Cherry and White always play a challenging schedule and this year is no exception.

Be sure to stop back next week for division previews and predictions in the Wyoming Valley Conference and Lackawanna League.

See you in the bleachers.

A CAUSE WORTH SUPPORTING

This year, the Coaches versus Cancer awareness and fundraising efforts have expanded to include all of the Wyoming Valley Conference schools, making it a District 2 wide event.  Be sure to mark down the weekend of January 29 and 30 as home teams will be staging a variety of creative happenings.  Phil Martelli (St. Joseph’s mens basketball coach) was on-hand back on November 15 for a breakfast at Scranton high school.  What began as small initiative a few years ago by Andrew Kettel (Lackawanna Trail) has really turned into something special.  The NEP Beat would like to do our part to communicate the various school activities planned by players, coaches, student councils, or booster clubs.  What is your school doing?  Let us know and we will include all the details on a Coaches vs. Cancer info page.

MISERY LOVES COMPANY

Last week the Beat discussed the likelihood that the District 2 playoff format will be modified for the 2010-2011 season.  The main issue at hand is the open-format tournament which allows teams to compete regardless of the number of wins they achieve.  Think District 2 is the only district to allow winless teams into postseason competition?  Think again.  As of this year, District 4 has also adopted an open-team playoff format.  Clearly, there is a growing movement on some administrative level to reward teams without requiring any measurable achievement.  Just one opinion, but our student-athletes deserve better.  Everyone seeks a challenge and falling short of a goal can really hurt, but it can also motivate the true competitors.  That applies to the classroom as well as on the basketball court.

BOYS TIP-OFF TOURNAMENT RECAPS

There were 6 tip-off tournaments involving local teams last weekend.  In addition, the Finan Tourney concludes tonight in Carbondale as West Scranton battles Carbondale for the title and Honesdale take on Forest City in the consolation game.  In the semi-finals on Monday Tom Horan scored 19 points to lead West Scranton to a 55-31 win over Honesdale and Carbondale rolled over Forest City as Michael Jordan netted 20 for the Chargers.  The Lackawanna Trail Tourney gets underway on Friday night with Trail, Lakeland, Lake-Lehman, and Mid Valley competing.

Pittston won their 4th straight Anthony Marseco Memorial championship with a 50-32 win over Old Forge.  The Patriots also gained a semi-final win over Northwest Area (59-52) getting a terrific effort from their pair of senior forwards Kendrick Wiggins and Dwight Houseman who netted a combined 47 points in the two games.  Northwest rebounded in the consolation game with a 64-23 win over Wyoming Area.  At the Berwick Nespoli Tourney, Hanover Area captured the title and got off to a strong start with a pair of wins over Wyoming Seminary (49-37) and Berwick (40-31) as their big man Nate Jendrzewski (6-5 senior) netted 30 points total and gained MVP honors.  Wyoming Seminary bounced back for a 39-32 win over Montoursville in the consy game.  In the Hawley Rotary Tournament, Wallenpaupack advanced to the title game with a 39-32 win over Mid Valley, but dropped the championship game to Monticello (NY) 54-50 despite getting 18 points from Isaiah Slutter.  Mid Valley gained 3rd place honors with a 39-36 win over Western Wayne as Ronny Tomasetti scored 15 points.  Blue Ridge came away with the championship of the Sayre Tip-Off Tourney by getting by Elmira Free Academy (60-46) in the semi-finals as Marvin Green scored 18 and Jared Conklin had a double-double with 14 points and 14 caroms.  In the title game, they slipped by Thomas Edison in OT (58-50) as Alex Cardoza scored 19 and Dylan Pruitt added 13.

The Hazleton Cougars traveled to the Orlando, Florida Tip-Off and played very well in their opening night win over Colonial High (3-4) 60-54.  They trailed by one point after three periods (43-42) but rallied behind the solid play of Paris Cleveland (22 points) and sharp-shooting of DJ Myers (12 points on 4 treys).  On Saturday night the Cougars got another strong effort from Cleveland (17) and Myers (10) along with high-scorer Adam Davis (17 points), but came up a bit short in overtime, 63-62 to First Academy Prep.  It was a back and forth game all night with Cleveland sending the game to OT on a last second basket.  Dillon Graham scored 22 for the winning Royals.  Williamsport competed in the challenging York Bearcat Tourney.  The Millionaires, who lost the top 8 players from last year, found themselves trailing 21-8 after the first period to William Penn (the defending state champions) and dropped an 83-43 loss in the opening round.  In the consolation, the Cherry and White went up against a strong South Philly squad.  Though they only trailed 25-20 at halftime, they lost 58-45 (Codie Engel netted 19).

BOYS EXHIBITION ACTION HIGHLIGHTS

Abington Heights and Holy Cross got together for a battle of highly-regarded Lackawanna League teams in Clarks Summit.  The Comets held Holy Cross scoreless for 5 minutes in the first half to turn a 4-2 deficit into a 16-4 lead and went on to post an impressive 61-46 win over the Crusaders.  Ross Danzig was high-scored for AH with 19 points.  Other key efforts were provided by 6-8 Nate Basalyga (11 points), Ryan Vassil (11), and Luke Peterson (10).  Holy Cross was paced by Louis Cipriano and Brett Podhyski who combined for 24 points.  The Comets also added a 66-38 win over WVW as Basalyga scored 18 and Danzig had 16.  Holy Cross rebounded with a convincing 63-37 win over Lackawanna Trail (Cipriano scored 16) who began their season with a 43-37 win over Tunkhannock.

Holy Redeemer bolted out to an 11-0 lead (behind Pete Alexis scoring the first 8 points of the game) and seemed to be comfortably in control throughout most of the game against Scranton, leading 38-28 after three periods.  But, the Knights finally found their shooting touch after enduring a miserable night from 3-point land and only trailed 55-52 with just over three ticks left following a Royal foul shot.  The ensuing baseline trey was off target, preserving the opening night win for Holy Redeemer.  Alexis was high scorer with 22 points and Steve Ruch added 14 from the perimeter.  For Scranton, the versatile and athletic Terry Turner was impressive and netted 19, Bilal Floyd 18, and Ian Redetzky played very aggressive underneath the basket grabbing 13 rebounds.  Things did not get much better the following afternoon for Scranton as they once again lost by 3 points missing another game-tying trey at the buzzer.  The Knights were led by Bilal Floyd with 22 points (5 treys) and Terry Turner with 17 points, but came up short to Pocono Mountain West, 77-74.  Holy Redeemer topped Nanticoke 65-41 Monday night.

Wyoming Valley West split a pair of games over the weekend, dropping a 72-63 loss to Bethlehem Freedom as Eugene Lewis scored 26 for the Spartans in the loss.  Lewis scored 21 the next night and teammate Jim Smicherko added 17 as WVW rallied for a 60-50 win over Pleasant Valley.  GAR also gained a weekend split, losing to cross-town city rival Coughlin 56-40 as Joe Caffrey scored 23.  Coughlin struggled from the foul line in that game, only converting 21 of 43 free throws.  The Crusaders added a win over city rival Meyers Monday night.  GAR rebounded to get by Minersville 54-50 as Shaliak Powell and Christian Skrepenak combined for 27 points.  The Grenadiers also got by Wyoming Area 62-49 Monday night.  Crestwood started the season with a 48-32 win over Nanticoke as their senior guard Mike Abramcheck scored 17 (Cael Evans had 15 for the Trojans).  The Trojans also dropped a 48-35 loss to Dallas as Hunter Englehart scored 24 for the Mountaineers.  Dallas is off to a 2-0 start with a big win over local rival Lake-Lehman 73-46 on Monday.

In other action, Joe Caruso (6-0 senior guard) scored 33 points for Forest City in their 73-72 win over Lakeland (Eric Grabowski had 26 for the Chiefs).  Ryan Forte (5-8 junior guard) scored 21 for MMI, but the Preppers came up short to Shenandoah Valley 55-53.  MMI also lost to Panther Valley, 72-31.  Carbondale captured the Red Wallace game with a come from behind win over Elk Lake, 51-44 as Dylan Cerra scored 22 and Michael Jordan had 15.  Dunmore got 22 points each from Jake Rowland and Mike Ehnot in their 65-45 win over North Pocono.  The Bucks outscored the Trojans 41-21 in the second and fourth stanzas.  Dunmore also defeated Lackawanna Trail (66-43) on Monday.  North Pocono enjoyed a successful opening of the new gym Monday night with a spirited 73-63 win over Riverside.  Scranton Prep got a fabulous effort from 5-11 freshman guard Karlon Quiller (13 points) and 12 from Leo Walsh in their 59-36 win over Wilkes-Barre Meyers.  Honesdale got 19 from Wade West (6-0 junior guard) in their 64-52 win over Valley View.  Also, Montrose edged by Riverside 44-42 as Colby Major netted 16 for the Meteors.  Montrose defeated Mid Valley 38-26 on Monday.

Nate Basalyga (6-8 senior center) has returned from a leg injury which kept him out of action most of last season and is an important weapon in the Abington Heights lineup.  Nate scored 11 points in their opening night win over Holy Cross and added 18 more in their 6-38 win over Wyoming Valley West Monday night.

GIRLS TIP-OFF TOURNAMENT RECAPS

There were nine girls tourneys completed over the weekend and the WVW Spartan Tip-Off concludes tonight when host Wyoming Valley West takes on Pottsville Nativity in the championship and Wilkes-Barre Meyers meets Dallas in the consolation matchup.

At the Hazleton Lady Cougar Tip-Off, Hazleton renewed their rivalry with Abington Heights.  The Lady Cougars prevailed in the semi-final for a 56-54 win as Kayla Mantush netted 13 and Brianna Dudeck scored 12 (plus she was all over the court and came up with the game winning steal in closing moments).  The game featured big scoring swings a seen from the Lady Comets 13-0 run to take a 41-40 lead, only to have Hazleton go up 49-41, and then AH rallied to tie the game at 49.  AH was led by Maggie Freuhan (13), and Sam Paolucci (11) who fouled out late in the game.  The Lady Comets secured 3rd place honors the following night with a 42-32 win over Spring-Ford as Mariah Deibert netted 13.  In the championship game, Hazleton held a seemingly secure 33-24 lead midway through the third (and was up 35-30 after the period), but dropped a 53-45 loss to perennial state powerhouse Cheltenham as Shayla Felder was spectacular for the Panthers scoring 27 (and hitting 15 of 16 free throws).

At the Anthony Marseco Memorial Tourney, Old Forge trailed at halftime of their semi-final against Wyoming Area, but rallied for a 42-30 victory.  Senior center Kim Kaville scored 20 (plus her career 1,000 point).  In the other semi-final Lauren Smicherko (18), Brianna Dushak (16 points, 15 rebounds), and Mia Hopkins (14) paced Pittston in a 59-34 win over Lakeland.  In the title game, Kaville scored 17 and Aleca Semenza added 16 as Old Forge got by Pittston 51-42.  For the Lady Patriots, Hopkins and Smicherko combined to score 32 points.

Honesdale captured the Hawley Rotary Tourney with a 45-31 win over Carbondale as Marisa Gallik scored 16 (Brittany Mang had 16 for the Chargerettes).  Mang also scored 17 in a semi-final 40-28 win over Wallenpaupack.  Paupack won the consolation over Western Wayne 33-25 as senior forward Anne Vega scored 20 and pulled down 13 rebounds (she had 20 rebounds in the semi-final loss to Carbondale).

In other tourney action, Tunkhannock rallied from a 29-22 deficit to defeat Elk Lake 39-33 in the championship game of the Kiwanis Tournament.  In the semi-finals Karley Caines scored 17 points to lead Elk Lake passed GAR 58-46 (the Lady Grenadiers got 35 of their points from Jess Mantigney and Julianna Leko).  Blue Ridge took the consolation game of the Sayre Tip-Off with a 43-37 win over Sullivan County (Reilly Gavitt had 23 for Sullivan).  Lake-Lehman is already showing some good early chemistry in winning their Lake-Lehman Tip-Off with a 62-40 win over Northwest (junior Selena Adamshick scored 17).  Adamshick scored 33 points in their 64-44 semi-final win over Wyoming Seminary (Lauren Skudalski had 22 for Seminary).  At the Pocono Mountain East Tip-Off, Berwick dropped a semi-final game to Shamokin (53-37) as Megan Nastelli scored 16, but took the consy over Bronx (44-34).  Hanover Area captured the consolation game of the Hughesville Tournament 57-34 as Dainelle Tuzinski scored 18.  And at the Lewisburg Tip-Off, Williamsport looked very sharp in a 49-36 win over Donegal as Rachel Fatherly scored 17 points and grabbed 14 rebounds.  In the title game, the Lady Millionaires appeared to have a let down against a solid Lewisburg team and dropped a 52-46 game in the championship (Port was up 36-35 after three periods).

GIRLS EXHIBITION ACTION HIGHLIGHTS

Holy Redeemer has bolted out of the gate in full stride so far.  The Lady Royals ran their patented, smothering defense and attacking offense to perfection in overpowering a rebuilding Scranton team 80-54 (they were up 20-2 after the first period).  Monica Wignot scored 22 points and was a force all over the court.  For the Lady Knights Sara Corbett netted 20.  Of note, the two teams combined to shoot a mind-numbing 55 of 77 free throws on the evening.  Holy Redeemer did not miss a beat in defeating State College Monday night.  Also on Monday Scranton hosted Hazleton in what has become a terrific matchup in recent years.  That one was back and forth all night, but Hazleton put the game away from the free throw line for a 68-64 win.  Scranton Prep, a team definitely worth keeping an eye on this year, employed trademark Ross Macciocco defense in defeating his former school, Dunmore by a score of 42-33 (Meghan McDonald scored 23 for the Classics).  The win marked the 529th in the career of Macciocco, a new local win total in girls hoops.  Prep took on WVC Division 1 Crestwood Monday night and came up a bit short in overtime (46-36) as the Lady Comets got a great game from Chelsea Cornelius (17 points) and hit 25 of 30 team free throws.

Mid Valley, a team many consider to be one of the best in the district this season, got off to a 2-0 start with wins over Notre Dame (64-24) as Danielle Terranella netted 22 and also Hanover Monday night (68-29).  Montrose is also off to a 2-0 start.  The Lady Meteors edged Valley View 46-44 as Dallas Ely hit the winning free throws and scored 17 points.  Top inside scorer and rebounder, Rebecca Keegan, did not play for Valley View due to a knee injury.  Montrose also defeated Wyalusing Valley Monday night.  Holy Cross, a team that might surprise some teams in LL Division 23 his season, got a great effort from Julie Kosin (20 points, 12 rebounds) and Mary Sempa (17 points, 4 treys) to defeat Mountain View, 52-34.  The Lady Crusaders also rolled over Elk Lake Monday night, 64-44.

Lake-Lehman improved their mark to 3-0 with a solid win over Tunkhannock (53-48) on Monday night as Gaby Olshemski netted 20 (11for 11 from the charity stripe) and Selena Adamshick scored 22.  Nanticoke got 13 points from Jen Harnischfager in a 50-34 win over Coughlin (Kacee Rava had 18 for the Lady Crusaders).  Riverside rallied from a 31-23 deficit after three periods to defeat North Pocono, 43-42 (Angela Dente had 13 for the Lady Vikes).
