Wild week in LL

Last week (Jan 21-28) gave us some games that some fans/players/coaches will remember for a long time. First up was the M Central all –time scoring record set by Tyler Funk. The Barons beat the Cocalico Eagles 58-41 on Jan 27. The Eagles tried to hold high scoring Funk down by playing a box and one, but the St Joe bound recruit still managed to break the scoring record previously held by Tom Kenneff- 1706. Funk could be headed for much higher totals depending on how far the Barons go in the post season.

The 2nd historical type of game featured Hempfield vs Warwick, also on January 27th. Final score 90-85 Hempfield. Score after the first? 8-4 Warwick. Score at the end of 4?  47 all. Why historical? 5 OT's. We put it out on Twitter and will now to see if any other LL boys teams have gone 5 OT's. LLhoops will try to write up something on the feature game.

Official Scorebook shots below. Thanks Tom Clausen, Warwick, for allowing LLhoops access.

Standings/Take....

Section 1..the Lebanon Cedars clinched first place last week. The always interesting part of Section 1 is who is in for the final slots. This year, at this moment in time (Jan 29) Crest and Hempfield are tied at 7-4. TWP is one game back and McCaskey and Warwick are 2 games back with 3 to play. .and Hempfield is at Crest Tues! We are thinking a 3-0 end for any of these teams (due to others playing others) could result in a slot in the LL's.  The term I heard when watching ACC play this weekend was the canibilization on the league. This term applies in Section 1.

Section 2......MC sits on top with a 1 game lead over Ephrata. Those 2 teams meet again the last night of regular season games. Interestingly, the LS Pioneers are in third but play MC and Ephrata at home this week. LS is one game off the pace behind Ephrata and 2 games up on Spot. With at least one win this week, LS should be in good shape. If the Pioneers drop 2, then Spot (at Etown Tues and at MC Friday) could come into play for the third and final spot.

Section 3....Look like a done deal as far as the teams qualifying. LMHS has a 1 game lead over Lanc. Catholic.  Lanc Cath has a 3 game lead over Columbia. LMHS and Lanc. Cath. play the last evening of regular season play.

District 3 tournament....According to the D3 website, ALL games count up to Feb. 9th. We checked today and most records are up to date but not all. A lot of teams used to schedule, and still do, games at the end of the year, depending on whether or not they needed them for district 3 points. It appears that D3 has taken care of that by pushing the deadline out till Thursday. Some playoff games could be impacted on the final standing in the power rankings.

Tweet tweet.....good time this weekend going down the 'old' folks road. As Llhoops was tweeting out about the 5 OT game, there was some discussion on the 4OT Lebanon/CV in 2004. The game was for first place- a playin game J Steve Thomas @sctvi, Andy Mease @amease YDR , and Bob Swavely @swave1996 weighed in.  Great feedback. In a side note to Friday's contest, LLhoops was using his cell phone to tweet. The auto correct made it a pain in the butt to get out Hempfield. So....I used Hemp, thinking that all our followers would know that I was referring to the Black Knights. Lo and behold, LLhoops picked up some followers that really liked the word HEMP. New world, I guess. Andy Herr @andybrackets does a great job of getting us in game info for LL contests, and of course, his weekly wraps are excellent as well. I also received some love/hate while following the Miami/Duke game last weekend. Kirk N @KirkNeidermyer keeps llhoops stats up by posting his photos and re-tweeting LLhoops info.

Just for fun....We checked on win streaks- current, which includes non-league games: MC is 8-0 (last loss to Spot), Lebanon is 7-0 (last loss to Palmyra), LS 5-0 (last loss Cocalico), LMHS 4-0 (last loss to  York Cath), TWP 3-0 (Last loss Lebanon).

Also, in this category is the fact that 3 LL coaches are sitting on 101 wins- Tim Speraw (Lebanon), Brad Herr (CV),and Danny Walck (Hempfield totals only). With Tom Smith of Crest hitting the magic number of 100 earlier in the season, we have 4 coaches who hit the cnetury mark in the smae season. That is very very special. Congrats to those coaches and programs.

Thanks to Jerry Shenk for providing us with all time LL coaching records. He is the best source of PA HS hoops history.

LL trivia: Last column trivia....Coach Herr wins 100 for CV this past week. Can you name the CURRENT LL head coaches that have over 100 wins?

LL trivia: Can you name the last LL teams to win district titles? 4A, 3A, 2A, 1A?

Enjoy another week of LL contests (last full week for a lot of teams).
