It’s difficult to describe the joy and heartbreak in a late game buzzer beater…but here goes.

Warwick and Hempfield entered the game clawing to keep in the LL playoff race. The Knights were coming 1-2 in their last 3 games. Warwick was 2-1 in their last 3 contests – losing to Section 2 leader Lebanon at Lebanon 3 games ago. Both fans bases were out in force – a nice crowd at Hempfield. Fans were treated to a wild …wild finish.

Hempfield got off to a quick lead at 15-7. Cole Overbaugh, 6’5” sn, doing most of the damage as he netted 7 points in the first quarter. Warwick’s Tate Landis, 6’ sn guard, did his best to keep the Warriors in striking distance as he accounted for 10 of Warwick’s 1st quarter points. Chase Krall, 6’1” sn, capped the scoring at the end of the period with an old fashioned three point play. The Warriors closed the gap to 1. Hempfield up 14-13 after one.

The offense for both teams slowed down to a crawl in the second. A follow by Carter Horst, 6’1” soph, gave the Warriors their last lead until late (like 10 seconds left on the game- more later) in the game at 15-14. Hempfield countered with a follow by Overbuagh, an and one by Micheal Hester, a three -ball by Micheal Rieker, 6’2” jn, and another three-ball by Miggy Pena. Landis would stop the bleeding as he scored late in the second an a strong drive. 25-19 Hempfield at the break.

Coach Danny Walck was encouraging his team to get stops on the defensive end. The Knights responded by holding Warwick to 12 points in the quarter. Hempfield started to take advantage inside as they posted Overbaugh a lot in the quarter. Ben Troyer, who was scoreless in the first half, canned a three-ball and a nice backdoor layup to put Hempfield up 40-31. Pena scored and a drive, and Overbaugh finished the scoring for the Knights. 43-31 after 3

Hempfield has had some very tight games at home the last few weeks. Tonight was no different. Warwick came out in a half court trap – forcing some turnovers but more importantly the speed of the game changed drastically. At this point the Warriors seem to dictate the speed of the game. Warwick cut the lead to 5 points at the 4:37 mark of the 4th. Landis had some help from his teammates on the offensive end- buckets by Ryan Fink, Trevor Evans, Avery Sapp.

Now things were starting to get real tight. A Landis lay-up off a steal cut the lead to 3 at the 3:08 mark. Hempfield would counter with a lay-up. Sapp’s lay-up closed the deficit to 3. Warwick drew a charge – Landis hit 2 fouls shots and all of a sudden the difference in the game is 1 point. Hempfield was caught between trying to run out the clock and scoring. Parker Wolfe for Hempfield hit 2 big foul shots at 1:35 mark to put the Knights up by 3. Warwick missed on its three attempt, but they forced a turnover. Landis would get to the rack again under 30 seconds: 54-53 Knights. Warwick fouled right away. Hempfield mis-fired on both foul shots giving us a fantastic finish. Landis broke down the Knights defense. Landis fed Fink who found a cutting Trevor Evans for a layup and a 1 point lead under 10 seconds left in the game. No timeout by the Knights. Pena ran the ball up the court- Warwick collapsed on him. Pena found an open Micheal Rieker, who canned a banker for the game winning bucket.

Sidelines…A fun game to watch as both teams made adjustments during the game….Tate Landis kept his team in the game with several key buckets…Hempfield used its size advantage at points during the game…Warwick’s effort on the defensive ends is very impressive- fundamentals on boxing out is outstanding…Coach Walck kept imploring his team to dig in….The intensity on boith ends seems like we are getting ready for playoff hoops…Both teams are alive for an LL berth…Both Section 1 and 2 should be fun to watch in the next few weeks….Key game Sat with Lebanon heading to Cedar Crest- both teams currently in first place.
