BOYS PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
Jake Curnow (6-4 senior forward) has helped lead a resurgence of Lakeland basketball this season. Last week, he scored 12 points as the Chiefs upended division leader Mid Valley, 39-35. Then, in a crossover victory over Elk Lake, the powerful forward contributed 14 points in their 53-36 win over the Warriors. Tuesday night, in a hard-fought battle against perennial contender Holy Cross, the senior netted 14 points in a 55-48 loss as the Crusaders pulled away from a halftime tie game.
Mike George (5-9 junior guard) is one several catalyst players which have turned Pittston Area in to a serious contender. He scored 14 points as the Patriots secured a thrilling last-second 54-53 victory over Wilkes-Barre Meyers. The tenacious guard then hit 16 points as the Pats defeated Tunkhannock, 60-50, enabling his team to exceed last year’s 6-win total. Then, on Tuesday night in an emotional battle against top rival Wyoming Area, the junior netted 22 points in a 70-47 win. Over the three games, George connected on 7 triples.
GIRLS PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
Renny Murphy (5-8 sophomore guard) is playing a key role in keeping Berwick in the middle of the Wyoming Valley Conference Division 2 race. She scored 16 points as the Lady Bulldogs edged a highly-regarded Wyoming Valley West squad, 52-50. Then, in a 51-41 loss to red-hot Hazleton Area, the sophomore point guard contributed 12 points. On Monday night against Dallas, Murphy netted 16 points as the Dawgs topped the Lady Mounts, 44-39.
Skylar Bianchi (5-10 sophomore forward) has Valley View among the leaders in Lackawanna League Division 1 play. She hit 12 points as the Lady Cougars defeated Western Wayne, 41-34. She then added a dozen more as her team got by Honesdale, 49-41. On Monday night, the senior forward contributed 11 points as Valley View got a 58-45 victory over North Pocono, their third straight division crossover win.
