Keystone Playoff Preview – #2 Mifflin County vs #1 State College

Written by: David Bray on February 21, 2025

Switching it up from Section 3, there is a title to be fought for in the 6A for Section 6 between Keystone’s Mifflin County and State College. Both teams have a lot to fight for with this game being one of the two wins needed to reach the state championships. Let’s take a look at tonight’s matchup and how these teams fare against each other.

Starting with Mifflin County, they head into this game 10-12, with a 3-11 record in the Keystone Division. Mifflin County has a few key wins with victories against Selinsgrove, Red Land, Mifflinburg, and Altoona. The Huskies have struggled with some of the larger teams in the Mid-Penn, losing to Lower Dauphin, Palmyra, Hershey, Mechanicsburg, and Milton Hershey twice. This Mifflin County team is historic for their program, putting together the second most wins in their history as a team under Coach Curry. The Huskies are led by senior guard Aidan Attivo, averaging around 15 points per game and consistently shooting throughout the season. Attivo along with sophomore guard Jack Curry have been very solid for the program this season, shooting lights out from beyond the arc and contributing on both the offensive and defensive ends. Junior guard Evan Strohecker and sophomore guard Luke Bender have been great for the team this year, dishing out a lot of assists and opening doors for Attivo and Curry to get scoring opportunities. Junior forward Josh Hartzler is the big man for this roster, averaging around eight points a game and gathering around five rebounds on average. This team is very guard-heavy and is a quick team to handle, however, their lack of size could be their kryptonite in the long run. Once this team gets hot, it’s very difficult to halt their shooting streak and they could make a huge run into a long-awaited state playoff appearance.

State College has been a difficult beast to tame when they’re on their game. The Little Lions finished the season 9-11 while finishing 4-10 in Mid-Penn Commonwealth divisional play. State College has key wins against Harrisburg, and Altoona twice, and any team’s biggest win to date, a win against Central York, a team that has been rumored to make a run for the state championship in the 6A. The Little Lions have been defeated by Carlisle twice, Chambersburg twice, Cumberland Valley twice, and Central Dauphin twice, all teams that were in the 6A playoffs in Section 3. This team is led by senior Reed Melvin who has been averaging around 17 points a game, followed by senior Charlie Yartz who averages 14 points per game. This team is centered around these two players who are extremely talented and brought Central York their second loss of the season off a 44-point combined performance by the two. In years past, State College has been virtually unstoppable, and under head coach Brian Scholly, this team hopes to reclaim glory and return to the 6A state tournament.

This game will take place at Bald Eagle High School at 7:30 tonight. All stats will be posted by me after the termination of the game.
