Easton Defeats Dunmore in Non-League Girls’ Matchup
Easton 52, Dunmore 40
DUNMORE – Easton, the current top 6A seed from District 11, traveled to Dunmore on Saturday afternoon to face the Lady Bucks in an interesting matchup of traditional winning hoops programs. While the temperatures were hovering around zero outside and the gym seemed a bit too frosty as well, the Red Rovers (15-2) heated things up from 3-point land connecting on 11 triples as they led from start to finish in a 52-40 win over Dunmore (who fell to 13-3 on the season). Easton is a well-coached team team with plenty of experience. They handle and move the ball around very well and have some good height on the floor.
The Red Rovers wasted no time jumping out to a quick 8-0 lead as they got triples from Gabby Wismer and Melina Cole (plus a layup by Cole). Leena Conte got Dunmore on the board at the 5:25 mark with a scoop layup, but Easton continued their hot start getting another triple from Melina Cole and a jumper from the foul line by Nat Amato, a seasoned floor leader that runs their offense with precision. Facing a 13-2 deficit just five minutes into the contest, Dunmore cashed in on a few missed shots and finished the period on a 6-0 run with inside scores by Michelle Nidoh and Conte plus a pair of free throws by Amanda Dempsey (to cut the deficit to 13-8).
Teams traded triples to start the second period (Wismer for Easton and Dempsey for Dunmore) before Lianna Cole got a putback at the 6:10 mark to go up 18-11. Dempsey continued to provide an offensive spark for the Lady Bucks hitting a triple to cut it to 18-15 approaching the middle of the quarter. The Red Rovers were playing solid defense and thwarted several Dunmore attempts to drive to the hoop. At what seemed like a key opportunity to gain some momentum, the Lady Bucks committed back-to-back turnovers and Easton took advantage going on a 10-0 run to end the first half as Melina Cole netted three more smooth triples, the last one from long range to go into the locker room with a 28-15 lead.
Missed shots and turnovers plagued both teams as the second half got underway. Dempsey scored 7 consecutive points for Dunmore exhibiting her agility with a reverse layup, another inside shot and a triple. Nat Amato and Elena Brunetti helped build their lead to 14 points at the end of the stanza as Amato connected on a pair of triples and Brunetti got a putback after a fast break and made a nice driving score down the lane, getting the feed in stride.
Easton got back-to-back treys from Amato and Melina Cole to start the final period, expanding their lead to 45-27. Dempsey continued to impress with a layup off a turnover and corner triple to cut it to 47-35. Wismer then got a nifty inside score on an inbounds pass before a triple by Janaya Martin cut it to 49-38 with under two minutes left in the game. The Red Rovers sealed the 52-40 victory from the charity stripe.
Easton was led by Melina Cole with 20 points (6 triples), Nat Amato with 15 points (3 triples) and Gabby Wismer with 10 points. Elena Brunetti and Lianna Cole combined for 7 points. The Red Rovers netted 11 triples and converted 7 of 10 free throws.
Dunmore was paced by Amanda Dempsey with 24 points (4 triples). Leena Conte, Jackie Brown, Janaya Martin, Michelle Nidoh, and Janessa Martin teamed up for 16 points. The Lady Bucks made 6 triples and converted 4 of 5 free throws.
