Cam Krushes Chiefs’ Upset Hopes

Old Forge 67, Lakeland 41

SCOTT TOWNSHIP – After playing nearly even through 9 minutes of action, senior guard Cam Krushnowski connected on a pair of triples that keyed an 8-0 run and gave Old Forge a 21-14 lead which they continued to build into a commanding 33-16 halftime advantage.  The Blue Devils are an exceptionally good team filled with senior experience and leadership.  They feature an outstanding blend of balance and use patience and quick-strike precision as guards Ryan DeMarco and Cameron Parker can make strong drives to the hoop.  And Logan Fanning is a force under the basket.  A 29-point outburst in the third period sent the clock running as Old Forge cruised to a 67-41 victory.

The Blue Devils jumped out to an 8-0 lead after the first three minutes as DeMarco connected on a pair of triples.  Fanning quickly made his presence known with a slam dunk and block on Chase RosencransLakeland settled down after a timeout and made a 5-0 spurt as Rosencrans scored in close range and David Naniewicz netted a triple.  Both teams were struggling a bit on offense as the remainder of the first period ended from the charity strip with the Blue Devils leading 11-6.

The Chiefs used a free throw and score by Rosencrans to pull withing two points, 11-9, with 7:12 left in the first half but that would be as close as they would get the rest of the game.  It started raining triples inside the Lakeland gym as Krushnowski nailed a pair while Fanning added two scores inside.  Jake McHale connected on a much-needed trey for the Chiefs, but Old Forge had pulled out to a 21-14 edge as tempers began to erupt both on the bench and in the stands.  The resulting technical on Lakeland midway through the stanza had minimal impact on the scoreboard but seemed to really cool off the Chiefs’ shooting touch as they could only add one more basket while Old Forge finished the half on a 12-2 run highlighted by a pair of impressive drives to the basket by Parker and one by DeMarco.  The Blue Devils went into the locker room holding a 33-16 advantage.

The third period was a 29-point explosion for Old Forge with Krushnowski canning three more triples early in the stanza to grab a 45-21 lead.  Lakeland got 5 points each from Rosencrans and Luke McFarland off the bench, but the Blue Devils were rolling as they continued to impress with strong drives to the hoop by DeMarco and Parker.  An “and 1” by Parker with 1:39 left in the quarter made it a 31-point lead (59-28) and sent the clock running for the remainder of the contest.  Krushnowski capped things off with his fourth triple of the period, making it 62-32 heading into the final frame.

With the benches emptying during the final quarter, a memorable highlight for many of the home fans was when Lakeland senior forward Peter Casassa netted his first points of the season, a triple that sent the gym into a thunderous uproar.  Those are the moments that really help define what a “victory” really is and what it can mean to a school community.  LLhoops is always proud to share those type of accomplishments.

Old Forge was led in scoring by Cam Krushnowski with 18 points (on 6 triples).  Ryan DeMarco (15 points), Logan Fanning (13 points), and Cameron Parker (12 points) all reached double figure in their balanced lineup.  Robby Solfanelli, Ayden Aversa, and Arthur Askew combined for 9 points.  The Blue Devils hit 7 of 12 free throws and connected on 10 triples.

Lakeland was paced by Chase Rosencrans (11 points), Jake McHale (8 points), and Luke McFarland (7 points).  David Naniewicz, Cole Tonkin, Ty Sokoloski, Peter Casassa, and Ryan McGrane combined for 15 points.  The Chiefs made 7 triples and hit 4 of 6 free throw opportunities.

Both teams will be back in action Friday night in Lackawanna Division 2 play as Old Forge (3-0) hosts Western Wayne (0-2) and Lakeland (0-3) entertains Holy Cross (1-2).
