EXETER TWP PICKS UP HARD FOUGHT 50-45 WIN AT GOVERNOR MIFFLIN

It is becoming more apparent with each meeting in any sport that Exeter Twp. is becoming the chief rival for Governor Mifflin. It was a great atmosphere Friday night at the “GMIS”.  The Mustangs and Eagles were literally the only game in town thanks to the weather.  Players and coaches from all over the #berksbeat were out in force to see these cross town rivals hoop it up.  A sluggish first half turned into an exciting and emotional second half.  Exeter Twp moved its record to (7-2) with a 50-45 triumph over Governor Mifflin Friday night.

The star of the night was Exeter Twp. Senior Center Riley Dobraniecki.  Riley ruled the paint all night with key blocked shots and rebounds.  Dobraniecki’s 20 points led all scorers.  Alex Javier turned in a strong second half performance and finished with 16 points for the Eagles.  Ben Walmer led Governor Mifflin’s balanced attack with 13.  Manny Alverez had a career night with 12 and Darius Copeland finished with 11.

Whether it was the cold weather or the lack of classes for two days the first quarter was not one to remember.  Both teams had difficulty making any shots and turnovers were a plenty.  The Eagles held the advantage after one 8-3.  Governor Mifflin got on track in quarter two from an unlikely source Manny Alvarez.  Inserted into the line up due to a suspension, Alvarez got inside on numerous occasions and his “falling down” shot at the buzzer tied the score at  18 at the break.

Riley Dobraniecki started out the second half fast and Exeter pulled out to a 37-30 lead after three.  Just that quick in the fourth, Mifflin pulled to within one with 5:46 left 40-39.  Exeter always maintained the slimiest of margin as Mifflin always kept it to a one possession game through much of the fourth quarter.  Down the stretch key free throws by the Eagles were the difference. Exeter came away with a 50-45 victory.

Looming large for Exeter is a matchup tomorrow afternoon with Berks Catholic  Next up for the (6-4) Mustangs is Wilson WL on Tuesday.
