Archbishop Ryan Defeats Rutgers Prep 75-56: Kehler on Hoops
Article by David Kehler

Archbishop Ryan senior Thomas Sorber set the all time school single game scoring record on Friday afternoon, tallying 41 points in a 75-56 win over visiting Rutgers Prep. Sorber, one of the top players in Pennsylvania, had a sensational all around game, with 20 rebounds and six blocked shots. The 6’ 10” Sorber, who recently became the fourth Ryan player all time to score over 1000 career points, will play basketball at Georgetown next season.

Ryan led throughout the entire game, opening the contest with a 15-3 run. Ryan’s scoring at the outset of the game consisted of a Sorber dunk, a Sorber hoop on a pivot move, another Sorber dunk, a 3-pointer by 6’ 3” senior Darren Williams, a 3-pointer by Sorber, and another 3-pointer by Williams. Rutgers Prep never recovered from Ryan’s opening blitz.

Nothing that Rutgers Prep tried could contain Sorber, and Ryan had two 19 point leads by early in the third quarter. Rutgers Prep, which has talent, hit some 3-pointers in the second half, twice cutting Ryan’s lead to 11 points, but they could not get closer.

Sorber dominated the game. In the contest, he hit two 3-pointers, scored on three three-point plays, scored on several pivot moves, slammed a variety of dunks, had multiple successful drives, and scored on a play in which he grabbed a defensive rebound and made a layup on the ensuing fast break. It was the most points ever scored by a Ryan player in a single game, and Ryan, founded in 1966, has been playing basketball since the 1968-69 season.

Archbishop Ryan is located in northeast Philadelphia and is a member of the Philadelphia Catholic League, the top high school basketball loop in the state and one of the best in the country. This season, with outstanding talent, terrific coaching, and a veteran squad, Ryan is a major contender for the league championship and for the PIAA Class 5A state championship. Rutgers Prep is located in Somerset, NJ.

For the game, Ryan out rebounded Rutgers Prep 41-33. Ryan committed eight turnovers, while Rutgers Prep had five miscues. Ryan was eight of eight from the free throw line, and Rutgers Prep was five of six. Ryan made seven 3-pointers, and Rutgers Prep scored nine times from beyond the arc.

Archbishop Ryan scoring: Thomas Sorber 41, Darren Williams 17, Rocco Marabito 10, Brandon Russell 5, and Jaden Murray 2.

Three of the Rutgers Prep scorers notched 13 points apiece: Myles Parker, Rocco Loomis, and Andrew Kretkowski.
