Archbishop Wood Defeats Father Judge 88-57
Archbishop Wood defeated visiting Father Judge 88 to 57 on Friday night in a Philadelphia Catholic League game in which the mercy rule was triggered. Wood led all of the way, and the outcome of the contest was never in doubt.
In previous games this season, Judge has relied on outside shooting as a major element of their offense. In this game, Judge ran at every opportunity, attacked the basket, and crashed the offensive board, while not focusing on plays or screens to maximize opportunities for outside shooters.
Poor shot selection plagued Judge in the early going, while Wood quickly jumped out to a 14 to 3 lead, with field goals from all five starters. With 4:30 left in the first frame, Judge coach Chris Roantree pulled four of his starters in an attempt to get his squad on the right track. After a couple of minutes, the Judge starters returned to action, but Wood continued to surge. 6’ 4” junior Jalil Bethea and 6’ 8” senior Carson Howard were particularly effective for Wood in the first quarter, notching eight points and nine points, respectively, in the initial period. A three point play on a drive by 6’ Wood sophomore Michael Green gave his team a 26-7 lead late in the first quarter. Judge never recovered from Wood’s early onslaught. Judge continued to try hard, and their offensive rebounding was really impressive, but Wood had too much firepower and too diversified an array of scorers for the visitors.
Wood out-rebounded Judge 38 to 32. Wood committed eight turnovers—only one in the first half—while Judge had a dozen miscues. Judge got to the free throw line a lot throughout the game, and they were 22 of 38 from the stripe. Wood was 14 of 16 from the line. Wood made four 3-pointers, while Judge made seven from beyond the arc.
