Chambersburg 63 Hempfield 52
Feb. 7, 2024

Chambersburg entered the game as the #5 team in District 3 ^A power points. The Hempfield Knights were 12th. Hempfield posted their score on the D3 website and as a result——Hempfield is number still #12 with a .0004 lead over Penn Manor. BTW, both teams complete a game tomorrow at Penn Manor with the Comets up by 1 point with 5:51 left in the third.

Chambersburg plays in the rough and tumble Mid Penn – let’s call it Mid Penn 1 for simplicity sakes. There are a bunch of “C” schools at the top of the League (Carlisle, Cumberland Valley, Central Dauphin and Chambersburg). And, the top seeded team as of Feb. 7th is yet another “C” team (Central York). The Trojans have a lot of good pieces- good inside play by Jemere Jones, 6”5” senior, a spark plug point who can hit pull up j’s in Ari Snyder, 5’6” senior, a crazy good athlete and also very skilled player in Jai’tavius Kelly, 6’6” junior, and throw in a few three point specialist and you have the makings of a team that can make a run in the districts. We must remember that the Mid Penn folks don’t view the  MP League tournament the same as the LL folks. Mid Penn coaches look at the districts as more important than winning the league.

Coach Sheffler was concerned about the game. “We knew that Hempfield needed a win for power rankings….They played very hard…2 teams competed very hard against each other…We got some separation in the third and that helped us.”

Hempfield got out to a 4-0 lead as each team was in the, ‘let’s see what the other team is doing’ start of the game. Chambersburg started taking care of the boards on both ends of the floor, whereas the Knights hit a cold streak on the offensive end. The Chambersburg Trojans ripped off a 12-0 run, which was highlight on a big-time dunk by Kelly at the 2:40 mark of the first. The Knights would claw back on a lie three-ball by Nick Dee. 14-11 after one.

As was the case all night, Chambersburg would get out to a semi-comfortable lead, and the Knights would answer. Camden Weyford popped a three-ball for Hempfield to tie the game, only to see the Trojans go on a run. This time it was Kelly with back-to-back jumpers (the last on a sweet spin move) and a drive by Landon Burman, 6’5” sophomore. 20-14 Cburg with 5:18 on the clock. Hempfield would answer and take the lead on a Deeg bucket. The Trojans again would answer by scoring the last 4 points of the second stanza to take a 24-22 lead into the half.

Ben Troyer, 6’4” senior and Hempfield leading scorer, connected on an old fashion three-point play. The Trojans answered yet again. This time with Kelly and Snyder teaming up (Kelly 3 point play, Snyder a three-pointer, Kelly a drive, and Chambersburg capped off their mini-run with a dunk off of a beautiful assist by Snyder). 34-25 at this point of the game. The Knights would cut the deficit to 7 on a dunk by Troyer. The quarter ended 43-33 Chambersburg.

Hempfield unleashed its half-court trap in the 4th. Chambersburg had a few turnovers, but, all in all handled the trap very well. Neither team could put together any runs the rest of the contest. Hempfield got to the line in the 4th, but Chambersburg would answer again and again. The highlight of the 4th featured Ben Troyer scoring his 1000 point on a baseline jumper. During the timeout, Ben took the ball over to his mom (a neat moment for sure). Both teams subbed out with about a minute to go.

Points:
Hempfield: Ben Troyer 24, Spencer Troyer 10
Chambersburg: Jai’tavius Kelly 25, Ari Snyder 14

Sidelines….I usually put the stats at the end, but I probably missed a bunch in the second half while trying to capture Troyer’s 1000 point bucket….I can say that Hempfield had 4 turnovers in the third that hurt their chances…Special thanks to AD Landis as he set us up with a table at the end of Hempfield bench…HS Sports was broadcasting the game on a Fox sub channel (3 cameras and multiple equipment) …Also Chambersburg had radio there…Thanks to Coach Sheffler for going out of his way to procure a roster with the correct numbers so this report would be accurate…It’s always good to see teams from outside the LL play in preparation for our coverage of District 3 hoops…

Thursday…LLhoop will try to RECORD the ending of the Hempfield/Penn Manor game. The plan is to post it as soon as we are done recording. Fingers crossed. We will tweet out the link AFTER the game is over. Dell, John Graham , and Warren Goodling will bring the action at Penn Manor and then head over to LS for a live stream game between LS and Cocalico (another LLhoops first). TJ Eck will provide his usual coverage of the Hempfield /Penn Manor game and the second game between Dallastwon and PM. There probably has never been a situation where 3 teams in order for power points are playing in such a game(s) .
