Finals of Tornado Tip off

Goals…each team sets goals at the start of a season- some written and some just known. The Warwick Warriors have a roster loaded with returners from the previous year. The Warriors, now at the 5A level for PIAA classification,  are looking to accomplish big things this season, including a run in districts and possibly states. Warwick entered the Tornado Tip Off needing to evaluate where they are and what they need to do in order to get to the top. The Warriors passed its first test by defeating a scrappy Chichester team 75-62. Next up – District 1 power Coatesville Area. Coatesville ALWAYS has top level teams at the 6A level of the PIAA. The Red Raiders are relentless on the defensive end. RELENTLESS. Coatesville harassed Warwick into 32 unofficial turnovers using a suffocating man and zone trap full court pressures the entire evening. Warwick hung for 3 quarters but eventually wore down.

A slower pace would help Warwick. The Warriors jumped out to a quick 9-2 lead, the last bucket on a triple by Trevor Evans, 6’3” sn. Coatesville called a timeout to talk about what to do on both sides of the ball. The Red Raiders put together a 5-0 run on a bucket by Zuri Harris, 5’11” sn and a three-ball by Patrick Hall, 6’1” sn. 11-10 Warwick with less than a minute left in the quarter. Two fouls shots by Cody Ryan, 6’ sn, provided Warwick with a 13-10 lead after one.

The second quarter was much like the first. Warwick was controlling the defensive boards, while Coatesville was using its stifling defense to produce points. Coatesville took a 20-19 midway thru the second on back-to-back buckets by Amon Fowlkes, 5’11” jn. The Warriors popped a three-ball by Caleb Johnsen, 6’3” jn with 30 ticks showing on the scoreboard to tie it up at 27. The Red Raiders made a foul shot late to take a 28-27 lead into the second half.

The third quarter turned out much like the first 2. Coatesville would pressure Warwick on the defensive end, while the Warriors would control the defensive boards and use the three-ball to stay in the game. Coatesville put together a 6-0 run (Three by Zuri Harris, a foul shot by Hall, and a drive by Fowles) 37-32 Red Raiders around the 6 minute mark of the third. Warwick would answer with their own run- 7-0 with all points scored by Johnsen. A sweet runner by Tyree Hughes, 5’11” sn, gave Warwick a 44-40 lead with 1:25 remaining in the period. Coatesville would use its defense to create havoc and turn the steals into points. The Red Raiders ended the quarter on a 7-2 run to take a 47-46 into the final stanza.

It seemed that Warwick just ran out of gas in the 4th. While the Warriors controlled the boards most of the game. Coatesville had an 8-2 advantage on the boards in the 4th, and they continued the pressure on the defensive end forcing Warwick into 8 turnovers for the period. The Red Raiders took control of the game using an 13-2 run capped off by a lob dunk to Lawerence Brown, 6’7” Soph. Warwick could not mount a comeback as Coatesville spread the floor and coasted to well earned ‘W”.
