Defense..defense..defense. This is the chant heard throughout the season. Well, Columbia used its defense to propel itself to a District 3 title. The Tide used its customary 2-3 zone and switched over to a 1-3-1 to cause multiple turnovers (14) and get a few run outs. York Catholic used a 2-3 and 3-2 zone itself until the Irish needed to try to pressure the Tide late in the game.
Coach Glover talked about leadership, and Section 5 (2 District 3 champs BTW) in his post game speech. Coach glover had a road map for the season , and so far so good.

Neither team could garner much offense in the first quarter- make that for the game. The Irish big man, 6’3” sn, Michael Shelley was a force early. He tallied a post move and a follow early in the first. Brady walker, 5”10” jn., added a jumper mid way thru the first to give York Catholic a 6-3 lead. Columbia’s outside game was not clicking vs. the 2-3 Irish zone. Jordon Poole, 5’11” soph, netted a layup at the 1:15 mark of the first period –  York Catholic 8-7. Hov Glover, 6’1” sn. dynamite point for the Tide, walked into a three ball at the buzzer- 10-8 after one.

York Catholic would tie the game at 12 at the 4:54 mark off of 2 fouls shots by Luke Forjan, 5’11” jn. The Tide switched tom its 1-3-1, slowing an already slow paced game to a crawl, at least for the Irish. Columbia strung together a 6-1 run (J’Von Collazo layup, a three-ball by Robert Footman, and a Glover drive at the end of the quarter. Tide 20-13 at the break.

The offense lagged the defense at the start of the third. Columbia would not score for the first 3 minutes of the quarter, and the Irish would only put up 2 from the line. Finally, the Tide would get hot. Brelon Miller, 6’2” soph, had a nice game on the baseline- scoring off multiple assists from the Tide guards. He netted a bucket at the 5:15 mark not the third that seemed to put the Tide into high gear. Collazo hit a three-ball and Robert Footman nailed one on the next possession, a Collazo drive ended the 10-0 run.Columbia up 30-15 around the 3:30 mark of the quarter. B. Miller’s sweet baseline drive and a foul shot ended the scoring for Columbia. 33-20.

The Tide put to bed any thoughts of an Irish comeback by 8-2 run to start the 4th quarter. Columbia’s defense continued to suffocate York Catholic, building a 20 point lead late in the quarter. Coach Glover pulled his starters around the 2:30 minute mark. York Catholic followed suit soon there-after. Final 47-30.
