Columbia displays balance in win over LMHS, claims Section 4 title

Written by: TJ Eck on February 7, 2024

There was no selfishness on the court Wednesday night from Columbia.

“That’s how I would love to see the game played every game,” said Columbia head coach Kerry Glover. “We share the ball that way, everybody is a threat, everybody is dangerous…it’s a recipe for success.”

The Crimson Tide racked up 24 assists on 27 made field goals while defeating Lancaster Mennonite, 67-49, at Columbia High School Wednesday evening.  The victory clinched an outright Lancaster-Lebanon League Section 4 title for the home team.

“It feels good,” said Columbia senior point guard Artie Poindexter. “(We) came out strong…and got the dub.”

Columbia senior guard/forward Brelon Miller added: “It feels great. A long time coming. Well-deserved. We worked hard for this stuff.”

The Crimson Tide started fast and finished strong. Columbia scored 19 points in the first quarter while racking up seven assists on eight made field goals. The strong offensive performance continued in the second quarter as CHS built a 35-28 halftime lead.  Columbia drained six three-pointers in the first half.

“We were just locked in before the game,” said Poindexter.

Poindexter was the best player on the floor Wednesday night. He scored 13 points, grabbed six rebounds, dished out 11 assists, and came away with two steals. His floater with 4:28 to play gave the Crimson Tide a 57-41 lead and brought the home fans to their feet as Lancaster Mennonite called timeout. Columbia closed the game out to claim the section title.

Four players scored in double-figures for the Crimson Tide. Miller and fellow senior guard Jordan Poole scored 17 points apiece while Ladarian Miller, Brelon’s younger brother, knocked down four three-pointers and finished with 12 points.

Columbia earns a home game in the upcoming L-L League playoffs.  The Crimson Tide will host Manheim Central, the second-place finisher in Section 2, in the quarterfinals of the league playoffs next Monday night. Columbia, with its large home crowds and tightly-confined playing surface, is considered one of the toughest places for opposing teams to play in the entire L-L League.

“That’s our advantage,” said Brelon Miller. “The crowd is louder. Sidelines are closer.”

Glover added: “I love our environment. We have an awesome environment. Best home gym around.”

Despite the loss, Lancaster Mennonite qualifies for the L-L League playoffs by finishing second in Section 4. The Blazers will travel to Section 2 champion Warwick next Monday night. Junior guard Myles Halverson led LMHS with 10 points Wednesday evening while junior forward Jadyn Taylor and sophomore forward Bill Rothwein scored nine points apiece.
