PIAA Girls 1A Championship

Bishop Guilfoyle 35, Mountain View 17

HERSHEY – After Mountain View grabbed their only lead of the game at 2-0, Bishop Guilfoyle used a 21-2 run to take control of the game midway through the second period.  The Lady Marauders, a very balanced squad that has a long history of Giant Center appearances, used their defense to create 21 turnovers and limit the Lady Eagles to the lowest PIAA championship point total in their 35-17 victory.  Despite Mountain View struggling to find any points, they played solid defense against their opponent.  BG was led by Morgan Ruggery and Maurie Querry who teamed up for 15 points.  Addison Kilmer paced the Lady Eagles with 8 points.  After coming up just short of reaching Chocolatetown last year, Mountain View took their entire community on another amazing run that will be forever remembered.

PIAA Boys 2A Championship

Aliquippa 74, Holy Cross 52

HERSHEY – Sometimes stats do tell the whole story of a game.  For Holy Cross, 21 turnovers resulted in 24 points for their opponent, many of which were part of 23 total fast breaks.  Aliquippa, denied state gold decisively in the previous two seasons (60-44 last year and 76-58 in 2022 in 3A), was not going to be turned away in 2024.  The Quips used a relentless attack on both ends of the floor showcasing their athleticism and strength to post a 74-52 win.  Their sensational sophomore guard, Josh Pratt, dazzled by hitting 14 of 19 shots and netting 36 points.  After the Crusaders played even through the first 3 minutes (7-7), Aliquippa put together runs of 10-2, 11-0, and 9-0 to roll to a 39-13 second period lead.  Holy Cross, for a while, seemed to be completely surprised by the Quips’ lighting fast tempo.  After approaching the cusp of being mercy-ruled (57-30, 61-32, 66-38) the Crusaders regrouped and were more competitive the rest of the way.  Michael Hughes led the way for HC with 13 points while Mario Matrone and CJ Thompson combined for 21 points.  With just one senior on their roster, the Crusaders will certainly be a team to watch closely again next season.

PIAA Girls 4A Championship

Blackhawk 56, Scranton Prep 44

HERSHEY – The Giant Center can be an intimidating environment for teams.  For Blackhawk, many of their first-time jitters were left on the Hershey hardwoods after a close 53-45 loss to powerful Lansdale Catholic last year.  Scranton Prep was also coming into Saturday afternoon’s championship game feeling very confident after eclipsing the 80-point mark in their semi-final win.  After falling behind 8-0 to the Cougars, the Classics rallied to cut it to 14-12 as high scorer Aubree Hupp (21 points) was on the bench for Blackhawk with a pair of early fouls.  Blackhawk got another 8-0 run before Bella Dennebaum nailed a triple to cut it to 25-17 at the break.  After falling behind by 15 points (32-17) following a triple by Alena Fusetti (18 points), Scranton Prep went on a 20-11 run over the next nine minutes to cut it to 43-37 with 4:06 remaining in the game.  After getting consecutive chances to close the gap further via a pair of triples, the Cougars grabbed an 8-point lead (45-37) two minutes later and proceeded to lock up the victory from the charity stripe.  The Classics, who were led by Jenna Hillebrand with 16 points and Maya Jenkins with 9 points, will be focused on another deep run next season with all five starters returning.
