Exeter 66 Mechanicsburg 49
Boys 5A PIAA 2nd round
March 14,2023

Exeter continues to impress as they make their way through the PIAA brackets. The Eagles displayed balance on the offensive end and had a shutdown third quarter on the defensive end to earn a well deserved W. Most teams need to game plan around 6’7” Anthony Caccese, the Eagles big man. Coach Mike Gaffey stated his team would work hard to limit his touches and the Wildcats did- but. … and a big but…Exeter had several answers, whether it was drives by Zion Paschall, 5’10” sn., or bombs from Reece Garvin, 6’3” jn., or several drives by Kevin Saenz, 6’3” jn.

Mechanicsburg came back from an early 18-11 deficit in the second. The Wildcats clawed (get it?) their way back and tied the contest at 23 with 2:25 left in the half. An old-fashioned three point play by Josh Smith, 6’1″ soph. , gave Mechanicsburg a brief lead at 28-27. Exeter got a bucket on a follow to end the quarter at 29-28.

Exeter battled through some foul trouble in the third period but clamped down on the defensive end. The Eagles held the Wildcats to only 6 points while extending the lead to 49-34 at the end of the quarter.

Mechanicsburg would get no closer than 12 points in the 4th. With the floor being opened due to M-burg trapping, the Eagles executed their full-court offense to perfection and coasted to the W.

Very unofficial stats
Rebounds: Exeter 30 M-burg 18
Turnovers: Exeter 10 M-burg 6
Blocks: Exeter 6 M-burg 2
