Garden Spot had their first game on their new floor Feb. 4, 2021. The tunes were the same, the distance between the fans and the players was the same, the shooing % from the perimeter was the same….The gym was much brighter….The hudl cameras were spot (get it) on. …and the Spartans beat a top-ranked York Suburban team.

The Spartans were a bit undersized, but they battled on the boards. In fact they won the rebounding contest by a large margin (32-19). Many of the rebounds were due to Y. Suburban’s luke-warm shooting – more misses more opportunities for rebounds….and run outs. Spot capitalized on several misses that produced many layups on the offensive end.

Garden Spot got off to a nice start, although neither team was shooting the ball well in the first quarter. Five different Spot player broke into the scoring column in the first period- Drive by John Dykie, Layup by Jahvar Hammond, A three ball by Jon Vega, a follow by Brendan Weaver, and a post move by Jesse Martin. Spot took an 11-8 lead after one…and never gave up the lead for the rest of the game.

The second quarter featured more of the same from both teams. Neither team could find a good rhythm on the offensive end. The Spartans were chasing Suburbans top players and living with three point shoots from the others. Suburban cut the lead to 22-16 at the break as top scorer for the Trojans, Alon Gorham , got a steal and layup at the buzzer.

Suburban would outscore Spot early in the third, cutting the lead to 25-23. Spot would answer with multiple run outs and inside play. My score read like this: Post, layup, layup, layup, post. With Weaver and Martin doing most of the damage. 35-27 after three.

Deja vu…Score sheet- Layup, layup layup, and layup. Spot up 43-32. Suburban turned up the heat, but Spot handled it well enough..made enough foul shots and held on for a big non-league, D3, “W”.

Points:
York Suburban: Alon Gorham 17, Camden Brewer 13, Aidan Hughley 12
Spot: Jonathan Vega 14, Brendan Weaver 13, Jesse Martin 12

Stats – Unofficial:
Rebounds: Y Suburban 19 Spot 32
Turnovers: Y Suburban 10 , Spot 6

Sidelines: After the game, I talked with Coach Muss about helping pick a player(S) of the game. Jesse Martin had a real nice game both scoring and rebounding. Joe Sharp was chosen for his defensive game. He was the first ever LLhoops Player of the Game that both the coach and this writer thought was a key to the game as he directed the swarming defense again Suburban.
