When you have 2 strong programs and 2 veteran coaches, you get to see a classic game. Both teams took care of the ball; both teams took care of their defensive boards: and both teams executed their offenses. Bottom line a three-ball late in the game as the Hempfield Knights held off a learning Wilson team.

The Hempfield Knights would string a couple of mini-runs. In the middle of the first, a lay-up by Miguel Pena, followed by a three-ball by Pena, and ending with a sweet spin move by Cole Overbaugh, 6’5” sn. Pena would top off the scoring with a three-ball at the :25 second mark of the period. Wilson was led by Cameron Jones, 5’10”- a strong defensive guard, combined with three ball range and a strong finish at the rim. (6 pts. in the quarter via 2 three-balls) Hempfield 18-13 after one.

Wilson would chip away to start the second. Hempfield would suddenly go cold. A Pena triple at the 6:12 would provide the Knights first points of the period. Aidan Meloggrana, 6’2” jn, executed a nice backdoor play and followed that up with a three-ball. 27-23 Wilson. Who else but Pena would nail a three-ball with Overbaugh posting up for 2. 28-27 Knights under a minute to play. Jones, for Wilson, got an old fashion three-point play at the :04 mark. Wilson created a 5 count, got the ball back, did a slip screen for a dunk at the buzzer by Foday Sillah, 6’4” jn. Wilson up 32-28 at the break.

Bang bang bang…The Knights scored the first 8 points of the third to take the lead and Mr. Mo 36-32. The Knights again would go cold. The Bulldogs would go on an 11-0 run. The quarter ended with Wilson up 45-40.

Hempfield would switch to its patented match-up zone. The Bulldogs has trouble scoring- only 5 points in the quarter. Even still, Wilson took a lead late in the quarter at 50-48.Wilson missed a few fouls shots, which set-up some late game heroics from Pena. Hempfield had the ball, took their time and found Pena for a wing three ball with 12 ticks left in the game. Wilson had a few shots late but would not score.

Points:
Hempfield: Miguel Pena 28, Ben Troyer 10
Wilson: Cameron Jones 25

Unofficial stats:

Coaches speak…Matt Coldren talked about his kids learning to play together and gaining game experience. …Said he thought they could easily be 5-1..Credited Hempfield with solid play….Danny Walck of Hempfield gave a lot of credit to Wilson- fundamentals, strong defense….gave credit to his players for their game IQ.
