Hempfield 62 Emmaus 59
6A First round PIAA
March 11, 2023

Playoff basketball – When teams get together from different parts of PA, sometimes we observe tight games, buzzer beaters (Garnett/Cumberland Valley), injuries, scrums, clutch (or not so clutch foul shooting), different whistles from what the teams are used to, teams that employ different offenses/defenses than what was on “tape’ (is there tape anymore?). The Hempfield /Emmaus game checked off almost all of the above.

Tight game– check
Buzzer beater– almost a check – Emmaus did get off a last heave that could have tied the game.
Injuries– both teams had players turn ankles. Hempfield’s Kamyn Lawrence was knocked out of the game.
Scrums– a given.
Foul shooting– Emmaus decided to foul on purpose with 4 plus min of the clock. It almost worked. Almost.
Different Whistles– neither team would shot a one plus in the first half. Second half saw players DQ’d via fouls.
Adjustments– Hempfield had to adjust to Emmaus getting to the rack by adjusting their defense.
Tape- Hempfield’s staff pointed to other Emmaus’ players being the top dogs rather than the excellent performance by 6’3” Jametric Harris.

Hempfield (District 3-3) was the home team- a very good crowd for a 4 pm start. The Knights would have the crowd behind it on runs, but it would get fairly quiet as Emmaus would go on its runs. Hempfield would miss early but still took a 5-3 lead on a post move by Kamyn Lawrence, 6’5” sn. , and an old fashioned 3 by Ben Troyer, 6”3” jn. Emmaus would answer with multiple drives to the basket. In fact the rest of the points in the quarter were ALL drives by the Hornets. After a 3-ball by Michael Hester, 6’4” sn., at the 2:10 mark of the period, Emmaus would run off the last 6 points (Will Barber 6’2” jn. , Jametric Harris 6’3” jn., and Jake Gotta 6’1” sn.) of the stanza- all drives to the hoop. 13-8 Emmaus after one.

Hempfield would get the ball inside in the second period. Big man, Lawrence, would score on post moves, rebounds and dishes from his teammates. He netted 11 points in the period along with multiple rebounds. The Hornets would stretch, a very small stretch, the lead  to 19-12 at the 4:59 mark with Dylan Danville, 6’1” sn, hitting 3/4 fouls foul shots. Lawrence scored on back-to-back possessions for the Knights tying the game at 21 with 2 minutes to go till half. Miguel Pena, 6’2” sn and Hempfield’s top scorer, finally cracked the scoring column with a huge 3-ball late in the 2nd. The Hornets would score at the end of the half on a tip in by Barber. 25-24.

The Hornets would get out of the gate quickly in the third as they went back to driving the ball to the basket. A Barber drive and a Lotta follow put Emmaus uo 29-24 early in the third. Then, the first of 2 key runs that would secure the W for the Knights. The first run included some jumpers and inside play (Chase Calabetta 2x, a Pena 3-ball and a follow and a layup by Lawrence.) Lawrence would go out with a turned ankle after the run. The Hornets would answer with a 5-0 run (Harris scoring all 5 points). 35-34 with 2 minutes left in the quarter. Enter Pena- he popped back-to-back 3 balls. The last one at the 1:25 mark. Neither team would score again in the period. 40-34 Hempfield.

Emmaus would again score early in the period as they did each quarter. The Hornets cut the lead to 3, only to see Pena pop another 3-ball. With the score 43-39, the Knights put together it’s last run of the game (Troyer 3-ball, Pena layup, Calabretta jumper) 50-39 Hempfield and timeout Emmaus. With the score 50-42 at the 4:45 mark of the 4th, Emmaus decided to go to the foul game. The Knights would struggle making 2/6 for the next 2 minutes. The Hornets were back to driving the ball hard as Hemfield’s shot blocker was out of the game. Emmaus took the lead with less than 2 min Utes left on a drive by Chase Muckey, 6’2” sn. 53-52 Hornets. Pena would answer with a bucket – 54-53 Hempfield. Barber netted a tough drive to put Emmaus up 55-54 at the 1:15 mark. Enter Nick Deeg, 5”8” jn. The point guard’s time on the floor down the stretch of Hempfield’s playoff run has been limited, but Coach Walck inserted him late in the game to help with the full court pressure that Emmaus was employing. Result? Deeg nails 2 HUGE foul shots. Emmaus kept fouling to give the a chance. With the Knights making one of 2 on 3 chances from the line, Emmaus cut the difference to 3 points with 7 seconds left in the game. Surprisingly, the Hornets took the ball to the basket for an uncontested layup instead of a game tying three-ball. 60-59 with 2 ticks left. Who gets fouled? Nick Deeg. Who nails 2 fouls shots? Nick Deeg. Who gets an LLhoops t-shirt? Nick Deeg 🙂

Nick Deeg- Hempfield

Sidelines…A bunch of media coverage for the game- radio, Live stream, LNP (Mike Gross) and LLhoops. S/O to AD Landis for coordinating media and getting fans in before the game….4 pm start allowed fans to get in and get home before dark. The PIAA has several Sat. start times in the afternoon….Good catching up with Eastern PA Sports (Andy writes for them during football season)…Ex LL coaches – Tim Glackin and Warren Goodling – took in the game…LLhoops had coverage of 4 games Sat. Columbia/ Philly W Catholic, Lancaster Mennonite/St Johns, Scranton Prep/Octorara, and Hempfield…Hempfield will play Spring-Ford Wed at Reading 7:30 tip.…The foul shot difference was due to Emmaus going to the foul game early in the fourth. Early on there were very few fouls called. Coach Walck stated that he thought the game would be physcial and talked to his team about that in pregame…Hempfield would score 10 of its last 12 points from the line…I had  Ben Troyer popping a three ball in  the fourth – the Emmaus book did not, but I’ll go with mine as my totals were the same with the points in the quarter. Maybe someone can confirm?..    The L-L had 3 teams advance Sat- Hempfield, Lancaster Mennonite, and LS. …Columbia and Octorara seasons are complete.
