Hempfield-Penn Manor game suspended after scary injury

Written by: TJ Eck on January 26, 2024

Friday night’s Lancaster-Lebanon League Section 1 contest between Hempfield and Penn Manor was suspended early in the third quarter after a scary injury.

Penn Manor senior guard Devin Figueroa stole the ball and drove for a layup when he was fouled in mid-air. Figueroa landed hard on the floor and appeared to strike his head against the court.

He was immediately tended to by on-site medical personnel. Spectators were told to clear the gym.

Paramedics/EMTs were called and arrived on-site to treat Figueroa. He was moving his arms and legs and was alert when he was loaded on to a stretcher. Figueroa was talking to both his family and medical personnel when he was transported out of the gym.

The decision to suspend the game was made in the wake of Figueroa’s injury. Penn Manor was leading Hempfield, 27-26, with 5:51 remaining in the third quarter when the injury occurred.

The day/time when the game will be resumed is unknown at the this time. Penn Manor’s game against Dallastown, scheduled for Saturday afternoon, has been postponed. The Comets are scheduled to visit McCaskey Monday night (Jan. 29).

Hempfield’s next game is scheduled for Friday, February 2 at home against McCaskey.
