Lancaster Mennonite 73 Windber 68 (OT)
PIAA 2A First Round – Boys
March 9, 2022

Windber, 2nd seed from District 5 (Johnstown area), entered the game 16-8. The Ramblers made the 4 hour trip to face Lancaster Mennonite the top seed from District 3. The Mennonite crowd was its usual load and proud group. Windber featured a well-rounded and balanced scoring, and rode the three-ball in the first half to hang in and take the lead at the buzzer in the first half. For LMHS, the Blazers overcame foul trouble, some key misses at point blank range, and used it’s defense to make a comeback late in the game.

LMHS ran out to a 9-2 lead early in the first- the last points coming by 3-point sniper, Declan Hersh, 5’10” sn., Windber stemmed the tide by buckets from Keith Charney, 6’3” sn. LMHS would put together a 4-0, causing Coach Slatcoff to call a timeout. From there, the Ramblers would ride 3 three-pointers (2 by Caden Dusack, 5’11” sn, and 1 by Blake Klosky, 6’ jn. A Camden Hurst layup at the end of the quarter gave the Blazers a 21-17 lead after the first period.

The Ramblers took its second lead at the 6:00 minute mark on a layup by Grady Klosky, 5’9” freshman at 22-21. Mennonite would run off the next 6 points, but David Weaver would draw his 2nd foul at the 4:25 mark of the second. With Weaver on the bench, Windber took advantage going on a 10-4 run – the last points coming off a deadly 3 by Grady Klosky. 33-32 Ramblers at the break.

Mennonite took a 37-33 lead at the 7:00 mark of the third- Hersh triple. After that, LMHS would have trouble scoring. Windber ripped off an 11—2 run capped off by an old-fashion 3 point play by Aiden Gray, 6’1” sn., At the 3:58 mark. Not only would he finish the play, but he drew Weaver’s third foul. Coach Buckwalter would massage the Weaver foul trouble for the rest of the night- sometimes taking him out and sometimes riding with him. One thing for sure, is that the big guy was very careful for the rest of the game. He did pick up his fourth, but he did not foul out. 45-43 after 3.

The Ramblers put together a 6-0 run to start the 4th. 51-43 with 6:27 to go. LMHS called a timeout to settle things. Whatever Coach Buckwalter said at that point, it was golden. The Blazers scored the next 6 in a blink of the eye – or the drop of a pen. Enter Jaedon Mast, 6’ sn. Mast would get a steal, missed his shot, followed his shot for the first bucket of the mini-run. David Shell, 6’ jn, would do a repeat except he made his break away layup. Following a Windber miss, Cam Hurst drove the lane using a Euro step to complete the run. Windber would survive the blitz and hang on. With about 4 minutes left in regulation, the Ramblers would grab a 54-49 lead. A Hurst drive and a bucket by Mast cut the lead to 1 at 54-53. Windber would again stretch its lead to 4 at 57-53 under 3 minutes left. Weaver would score inside for LMHS. 57-55. Windber would spread the floor and draw some fouls. The Ramblers made one of 2- 58-55 at the 37 second mark. Hurst would drive and score 58-57 25 seconds left. Windber made one of 2 fouls again. Windber 59-57 18 seconds left. Timeout LMHS. Wonder who might get the ball? Camden Hurst got the call..and took the ball to the hoop for a game tying layup at the 3 second mark. Windber would get off a shot, but OT we go.

LMHS took control early in the OT-Mast layup, Mast drive, a HUGE three ball by Myles Halvorson, and a foul shot by Shell. Mennonite 67-61 1:30 to go. Mennonite would keeps its lead between 4-5 points, but Windber would not go away easily. Dylan Evans, would score his only points of the game on a late three to bring the Ramblers to within 2 at the 17 second mark of OT. LMHS would make one of 2 foul shots, giving Windber one more look.
