The LL tournament is …awesome!
The Hempfield Knights took a small lead early in the 4th, clamped down on the defensive end and won a gritty game vs. Warwick. Both teams were tough on the defensive end. Coach Walck said his team won with a ‘grind it out’ type of game. The señor laden team, Hempfield, made a few more plays than the underclassmen team, Warwick. The final stanza displayed some senior chops as the Knights outscored Warwick 13-6.

Warwick was determined to keep the overall scoring down, especially on high scoring guard, Miguel Pena, 6’2” sn. Mason Burr, 5’11” jn., drew the initial assignment. Warwick was up 9-5 towards the end of the first- a drive by Y’Majesty Washington, 6’2” frosh, a triple by Trevor Evans, 6’3” jn., a follow by Burr and 2 foul shots by Carter Horst, 6’1” (everyone getting the idea that Warwick has a bunch of underclassmen? – make it their entire roster). Hempfield struck late with triples by Pena and Michael Rieker, 6’2” sn.- the last coming with 3 ticks left in the first. In a quarter pretty much controlled by Warwick, Hempfield takes the lead at 11-10.

The second quarter was a mirror of the first. Warwick would run out to a nice lead only to see the Knights comeback and score late. With buckets hard to come by, Warwick put together an 11-2 run towards the end of the quarter- the last points scored a three-ball by Washington. Hempfield would again score at the end of the quarter – this time a drive by Michael Hester,6’4” sn., with 5 ticks left in the half. 23-20 Warwick at the break.

Hempfield came out strong in the 3rd. The Knights scored on 5 out of their first 6 possessions. Ben Troyer, 6’4” jn., capped off a 9-0 run giving the Knight a 29-23 lead in the middle of the quarter. Warwick displayed its mettle- 7-0 run. Thomas Jeanes, 6’5” jn, popped a three ball with 3:15 on clock. Warwick briefly took a 1 point lead. In fact, Warwick stretched out its lead at 37-33 off 2 fouls by Caleb Johnsen, 6’3” Soph. For the 3rd time in the game, Hempfield would score late in the quarter – this time a big time three-ball by Pena. Warwick 37 Hempfield 36 after 3.

Hempfield started to get to the line in the 4th, something they did not do in the first half. Chase Calabretta, 6’4” sn., would make several big plays down the stretch. The first was a made fouls shot. Pena made 2/2 putting Hempfield up by 2. Pena nails another 3 ball putting the Knights up 42-38. Hempfield would never give up the lead after the 5:37 mark of the quarter. Calabretta made an old fashion three-point play giving the Knights a 6 point advantage. Warwick called timeout and went to a trapping defense. The Warriors got a block and a miss. They took advantage cutting the lead to 2 at 45-43 at the 2:16 mark of the 4th. The game turned on a play with both teams turning the ball over- first it was Hempfield giving the ball to Warwick. With Warwick on the semi-break, the Warriors turned the ball back to the Knights. The Knights took care of the ball the rest of the way, made some fouls and secured a final berth in the LL for the third year in a row.
