For the second year in a row, a District 7 lower seed (6th for Mars) travels to the L-L District 3 higher seed (Manheim Central #2) and comes away with a big W. Last season, it was Penn Hills taking down LS. This season, Mars gains the travel W. Coach Fisher, Manheim Central, was hoping that the long bus ride that the Fightin’ Planets (great name – not sure how the logo would look and hoping that Earth isn’t one of the planets fighting 🙂 Mars head man, Coach Charmody, pointed out that his team was healthy and had to guard top players in the WPIAL as they game planned for Trey Grube. In the end, the Mars Big’s (Remi Black, 6’6” jn. and Ryan Ceh, 6’5” jn)  were just too much for the Barons to handle.

The Fightin‘s got out to a quick start- with baskets by Tasso Sfanos, 6’2” sn, and Austin Campbell, 5”11” jn. 4-0 Mars early. Central’s top scorers (Trey Grube, 5’11” sn and Aaron Enterline) both scored to knot the game at 4 all. Ceh popped a three-ball and a jumper giving Mars an early lead. Mars scored the last 2 buckets of the half (Ceh and Remi) to take a 15-10 lead after one period. The Fightin’ Planets dominated the glass (8-2 ) in the period.

The Barons would lean on Terry Grube (1,800 plus scorer for his career). Grube hit 3 triples, the last one after a Ceh triple. Grube’s third three-ball gave the Barons their last lead at 19-18 with 4:44 to go in the half. Sfanos would answer for Mars- a runner and a j-, which propelled Mars on an 11-0 run. The run was highlighted by a backdoor cut and score by Ian Zukowski, 6’1” jn, off a dime by Stfanos. Mars capped off the run by a high jumping dunk courtesy of Mr. Ceh. A Black follow ended the scoring in the half- 33-21 Mars.

Manheim Central used several defenses, as they normally do throughout the game. The Barons tried a more aggressive 1-2-2 half court trap to start the third. The Barons seemed to find the key to getting some turnovers resulting in a 7-1 run cut the lead to 7 at 35-28 with a bit over 6 minutes on the clock. Mars would answer as they did all evening. This time the Planets used a three-ball (Deven Koch 5’7” sn) and a follow /old fashioned three-point play via Remi Black. Koch would nail another three ball later in the period to keep the lead. Aaron Enterline scored 2 fouls shots late to give the Barons some hope heading into the fourth stanza. 47-36 Mars.

Central cut the lead to 7 at 53-46 with under 4 minutes to go- the last on 2 foul fouls shots by Enterline. Enterline would also get his dunk in as well in the period, but, besides giving the Central fans something the cheer about, Mars would hold the lead. With the Barons trapping, the middle became open for the Mars big’s to get multiple put-backs late in the game. The Baron’s Zach Benner, 6’ sn, would end the scoring for the game. Final 61-49.
