Neshaminy Defeats Central Bucks East 53-42

Neshaminy defeated visiting Central Bucks East 53 to 42 in an upset on Tuesday night in a matchup between two Suburban One League teams based in Bucks County. Both teams are in the PIAA 6A classification. Coming into this contest, Central Bucks East was in first place in the Colonial Division of the Suburban One League, while Neshaminy was in second place in the Patriot Division. The Suburban One League has 24 teams arrayed in four divisions.

Central Bucks East got off to a fast start in this game, taking a 4 to 0 lead on a jumper by 6’ 2” junior Tyler Dandrea and a drive by Dandrea. The home side responded with a jumper by 6’ 1” senior Sean Curley and a 3-pointer by Curley to take a 5 to 4 lead. Central Bucks East then went on an 8 to 0 run concluding the first quarter on a backdoor hoop by 6’ 1” senior Nolan Jacob, two steals and breakaway layups by 5’ 11” senior Joey Giordano, and two free throws by 6’ 6” junior Miles Denby. It was 12 to 5 in favor of Central Bucks East at the end of the first quarter.

Neshaminy did much better in the second frame. Another 3-pointer by Curley, followed by a jumper by Curley and a pivot move by 6’ 2” junior Nathan Townsend tied the game at 14. Then the teams traded leads back and forth until a surge by Neshaminy late in the third quarter. Leading 32 to 29, Neshaminy went on a 8 to 2 run from the waning minutes of the third quarter into the final frame. Neshaminy’s scoring in that run consisted of a hoop inside by Townsend, a jumper by 5’ 8” junior Emeer Coombs, a steal and breakaway layup by Coombs, and another basket inside by Townsend. That made it 40 to 31, Neshaminy. Central Bucks East never recovered, and the closest that they got from that point was to cut Neshaminy’s lead to 46 to 40 with 3:06 left in the game on a 3-pointer by 6’ 1” junior Justin DiRoberto.

One of the signal aspects of this game was poor offensive rebounding by both squads. Each team had just three offensive rebounds, and two of the combined six offensive rebounds were team rebounds following a blocked shot. Central Bucks East occasionally played zone defense, and Neshaminy was particularly effective against the CBE zones. The game was played at a moderate pace that did not seem to favor either side. CBE’s fourth quarter comeback attempt was hampered by four turnovers in the frame. Neshaminy senior Sean Curley had a particularly good game. His shot selection was impeccable. He was a confident shooter who was seven for nine from the field, including scoring twice from beyond the arc. Also for Neshaminy, quick handed Emeer Coombs had some timely steals and timely buckets.

With this result, Neshaminy is 9-6 this season, and Central Bucks East falls to 14-2. Despite the loss, Central Bucks East is ranked 3rd in the PIAA District 1 Class 6A power rankings, and this team is likely to qualify for the PIAA state championship tournament. Neshaminy is ranked 17th among PIAA District 1 Class 6A teams but shouldn’t be counted out from qualifying for the PIAA tourney.

Neshaminy out-rebounded Central Bucks East 27 to 22. Each team had nine turnovers. Neshaminy was eight of 12 from the free throw line, and Central Bucks East was five of seven from the stripe. Each team made three 3-pointers. There were six ties and nine lead changes, attesting to the competitiveness of the game.

Neshaminy scoring: Sean Curley 18, Nathan Townsend 18, Emeer Coombs 13, Guy Horton 2, and Biome Gobah 2.

Central Bucks East scoring: Joey Giordano 11, Justin DiRoberto 10, Tyler Dandrea 6, Bryce Lolas 4, Kyle Berndt 4, Dhruv Mukund 3, Nolan Jacob 2, and Miles Demby 2.

Central Bucks East 12 9 10 11-42
Neshaminy 5 17 16 15-53
