Roman Catholic Defeats Archbishop Carroll 72-52

Roman Catholic defeated Archbishop Carroll 72 to 52 in a Philadelphia Catholic League game played at Holy Family U. on Sunday afternoon. It was Roman’s home game and the final regular season contest for both squads. Both Roman and Carroll have qualified for the the Philadelphia Catholic League playoffs.

Archbishop Carroll plays in a very up-tempo style, and they quickly took a lead in this game, spurred by three first quarter 3-pointers—two by Jake West and one by Ian Williams. Carroll never trailed in the first quarter, and they took their largest lead of the game, 20 to 12, early in the second period on a three point play by Dean Coleman-Newsome. However, Roman is an outstanding team with a balanced attack, and they forged ahead midway through the second quarter on a couple of free throws by senior Jermai Stewart-Herring. That made it 26 to 25 in favor of Roman. Carroll quickly recaptured the lead on a 3-pointer by Nasir Ralls, but Roman took the lead for good on a four point play by Stewart-Herring. Stewart-Herring was fouled while sinking a 3-pointer, and he made the free throw to give Roman a 33 to 30 lead. Roman then finished the first half with a 6 to 1 run, and they led 39 to 31 after 16 minutes of play.

Carroll cut Roman’s lead to three points 44 to 41, early in the third quarter on a 3-pointer by Williams, but that was a close as they got, as Roman went on a 10 to 0 run to seal the win. That run consisted of a hoop inside by Stewart-Herring, two free throws by senior Xzayvier Brown, a jumper by senior Erik Oliver-Bush, a jumper by Brown, and a dunk by Stewart-Herring. That made it 54 to 41, Roman, and Carroll never recovered.

For the game, Roman out-rebounded Carroll 33 to 18. Carroll had just one rebound in the third quarter. Roman had nine turnovers, while Carroll had 11. Roman was 14 of 16 from the free throw line, and Carroll was 10 of 13 from the stripe. Roman made three 3-pointers, and Carroll scored seven times from beyond the arc. There were three ties and three lead changes.
