Roman Catholic Defeats Scranton Prep 80-32

Roman Catholic’s defensive pressure propelled them to a 80 to 32 victory over visiting Scranton Prep in a game played on Friday night at Holy Family U. in Philadelphia. Playing against Scranton Prep’s 2-3 zone defense, Roman broke a 2-2 tie with a 12-0 run that consumed much of the first quarter. Roman’s run consisted of a hoop inside by Travis Reed, a 3-pointer by 6’ 3” junior Sebastian Edwards, a fast break layup by Reed, a fast break layup by T.J. Miller, and a 3-pointer by Reed. That made it 14-2 in favor of Roman. Scranton Prep broke the run with a drive by 5’ 11” junior Brycen Martin, but Roman then outscored Scranton Prep eight to three for the balance of the quarter, with five of those points scored from power moves by 6’ 7” junior Shareef Jackson. Scranton Prep never recovered, committing nine turnovers in the first half, and this was the game’s key statistic.

While Shareef Jackson was a formidable inside force for Roman, the team also had an outstanding outside attack. Roman scored 11 3-pointers in the game, with six different players hitting from beyond the arc. Roman’s Edwards made five 3-pointers.

Scranton Prep’s offense was more effective in the third quarter, with 6’ senior Kellen Casey and 6’ 2” senior Daniel Santaniello each notching five points in the frame. However,
Roman sank five 3-pointers in the third quarter to lead by 58 to 38 after three periods. The mercy rule was triggered with 4:38 left in the contest.

Roman is now 4-0, while Scranton Prep falls to 3-3. For the game, Roman had a 33 to 19 advantage on the boards. Scranton Prep committed 12 turnovers, while Roman had four miscues. Roman made all four of their free throw attempts, while Scranton Prep was three of nine from the stripe. Scranton Prep made one 3-pointer to Roman’s 11. There was one tie and no lead changes.
