Warwick 52 Lampeter-Strasburg 50
LL Quarter Finals
Feb. 13, 2023

LS is a very very tough place to play. Warwick was trying to get over the top in a close, meaningful game (lost 2 times to Section 2 champ Manheim Central – once in OT). Probably going to be a good game? Ah, yes it was. Maybe better than good? – that too. There were several big plays throughout the game especially in the 4th quarter where neither team would give an inch. In the end, Warwick’s Caleb Johnsen, 6’2” Soph., made 7/8 fouls shots in the final period as Warwick eeked out a 52-50 W.

LS would start the game with what else?…a three-ball by Justin Glick 6’2” jn. LS used a match-up zone or switching man for most of the half. Warwick would go man for the entire game. Both teams had their trouble finding the range in the first period. Thomas Jeanes, 6’5” jn, hit a three-ball for Warwick at the 3:05 mark to tie the game at 5 all. Warwick would only score 2 more points the rest of the period. Dean Herr capped the scoring in the first period by drilling a three with 5 ticks left on the clock. 13-7 LS after one.

Anther 3 ball by Herr, put the Pio’s up 18-9 at the 6:20 mark. Warwick would answer in a big way- Three by Jeans, old fashion three point play by Carter Horst, 6’1” jn, and a layup by Cody Ryan, 6’ jn. LS’ Coach Berryman saw enough and called a timeout. LS still held onto a 1 point lead at that point. A key play of the game occurred at the 3:44 mark as LS’ big man, Luke Hines, 6’3” sn., committed his 3rd foul. Off he goes. Jeanes, top scorer for the night, hit a jumper at the 1:00 mark giving the Warriors a 21-20 lead at the break. Warwick controlled the board in the first half as they held an 18-8 advantage.

Hines started the 4th quarter, and Warwick drew a charge on him at the 7:05 mark of the third. Could LS hang without it’s big man? Why yes they could! First, however, Warwick went on another mini run . Horst would nail a triple, Trevor Evans got in on the scoring with a drive, and Tyree Hughes capped off the 7-0 run with a layup. After LS cut the lead to 3 points, Warwick stretched its lead to 8 at 33 -25, the last points coming off a Y’Majesty Washington triple. Chase Smucker, a spark plug type of guard for LS, scored the last 5 points of the quarter. Warwick 35 LS 34. Game on!

Fourth quarter fire works! The game featured 6 lead changes in the crucial 4th period. The first LS lead took place at the 5:52 mark off a three-ball by Glick: 39-38. Johnsen would get the line to recapture the lead by making both: 40-39 Warwick. Luke Hines would follow up a shot and score in the post: 41-40 LS 5:02 to go. Johnsen made 2 foul shots and scored on a drive putting the Warriors up 44-41. Mason Burr, 5’11” jn. scored on a sweet drive too put Warwick up 49-46 at the 3:05 mark. LS would battle back yet again. This time it was Trent Wagner, 5’11” jn, on the offensive end- a jumper and 2 foul shots put LS up 50-49 with 2:08 showing on the clock. Incredibly, that would be the last points LS would post for the evening. Johnsen (did we mention that he made a bunch of fouls shots?) hit 2 fouls shots putting Warwick up 51-50 with 1:48 on the clock. LS missed and then fouled. Warwick made 1 or 2 giving the Pio’s another shot at tying the game- it was not to be. Warwick came out with the rebound, and LS fouled Horst. He had a 1 plus with 17 seconds to go. The ball rolled off the rim. LS had another chance to tie the game or win it. LS had the ball with 12 ticks to go on the sideline. The Pios Herr got off a shot only to have it blocked by Horst. Horst saved the ball, but LS intercepted and missed a bunny as the ball rolled around the rim. Game! What a game!
