The Bulldogs from Wilson played up to their nickname tonight. They protected the rim at all costs, kept attacking on the defensive end resulting in many breakaways, and kept the ball away (get it) from Hempfield down the stretch. Both Hempfield and Wilson play similar types of games in that they play good man to man defense, take care of the ball, and make foul shots. Hempfield’s defensive end was not an issue, but the Knights were hurt by multiple turnovers in the second half (8),and they did not get to the line often (unofficially 5/12 with a few coming late in the game).

Although the Bulldogs players are solid all around, the leader of the pack is Cleveland Harding, 5’10” sn. Harding led the Dawgs offensive attack- driving when he could, getting others involved with his vision and passing ability, and excellent on ball defense. Wilson also features a sweet big man, Ofure Odiale, 6’4” sn. Odiale had 2 monster blocks in the game as well as several post moves and follows.

As expected, there was not much scoring in the first half – each team doing its usually offense- take care of the ball. The first quarter was 8-6 Hempfield, and the halftime score was 20-19. The Knights would put together a “run” of 5-0 midway thru the second (A three ball and a layup by Michael Rieker, 6’2” sn. Hempfield did control the glass (10-4).

Would the first run put that team in control? Why yes it would. The Dawgs would run off a 11-0 run at the start of the third period putting them up: 30-22. A Rieker three-ball would stop the bleeding but only for a short time. Wilson put together another run – this time 9-0 featuring a nice pull up ‘j’ by Harding. 39-28 at the end of 3.

Playing Wilson while being down is like playing UVA of the NCAA. A 7 point lead feels like 20. The Knights cut the deficit to 7 early in the 4th as they went to a half court trap. Wilson took a few timeouts when they got trapped  but basically the Dawgs passed around Hempfield and passed and passed and once in awhile would take a layup. Oh by the way, they made their fouls shots too. Unofficially I had them 14/16 in the second half- not bad..at all.
