Archbishop Ryan Defeats Conwell-Egan Catholic 67 to 26: Kehler on Hoops

It was senior day on Sunday afternoon at Archbishop Ryan, one of the top teams in the state, and Conwell-Egan Catholic never had a chance in this Philadelphia Catholic League game. Egan lacked the height to match up with Ryan’s front line of 6’ 10” senior Thomas Sorber, a Georgetown recruit, and 6’ 6” senior Jaden Murray, whose quality of play has increased dramatically in the second half of the season. Ryan defeated Egan 67 to 26 in a game in which the mercy rule was in effect for the entire second half. In the third quarter, on an ally-top dunk, Sorber set the all-time Ryan career scoring record.

The outcomes of high school basketball games are very often determined by scoring runs, and Ryan had a 20 to 2 run from the second half of the first quarter into the second quarter. Ryan’s scoring during that span was a 3-pointer by Murray, a 3-pointer by 6’ 3” senior Darren Williams, a hoop inside by 6’ 3” senior Christian Durham, a fast break layup by Durham, a three point play by Sorber, a turnaround jumper by Sorber, a hoop on a pivot play by Sorber, a hoop inside by Murray, and a free throw by 6’ 3” senior Rocco Marabito.

Out-manned Egan was unable to recover and never threatened from that point. The mercy rule was in effect for the entire second half. On a spectacular ally-oop dunk in the third quarter, Sorber set the Archbishop Ryan all-time career scoring record.

For the game, Ryan out-rebounded Egan 41 to 22. Ryan had six turnovers, while Egan had eight miscues. Ryan was three of four from the free throw line, and Egan was two of six from the stripe. Ryan made eight 3-pointers, while Egan scored six times from beyond the arc. In the early going, there was a tie, and there were two lead changes.
