CENTRAL DAUPHIN DEFEATS CEDAR CREST 53-40

In a game that was not as close as the final score suggests, Central Dauphin defeated visiting Cedar Crest 53-40 on Monday evening in the first half of a boys/girls doubleheader. Central Dauphin was too tall and too quick for Cedar Crest.

Cedar Crest’s focus throughout the game was to set up shots from behind the arc, and their early success with couple of 3 pointers gave them their only lead of the game at 6-3. Central Dauphin then went on a 14-0 run for the balance of the first quarter and into the beginning of the second frame, on a free throw from senior Andrew Renaldi, a hoop inside by Renaldi, a steal and breakaway layup by 6′ 8″ senior Donovan Hill, a 3 pointer by Jaydon Laudermilch, a fast break layup by Renaldi, and two free throws by sophomore Jett Franz. That gave Central Dauphin a 17-6 lead, and they were never in jeopardy from that point. Late in the first half, a steal and fast break layup by junior Keon Dockins extended Central Dauphin’s lead to 27-9.

Cedar Crest hit four 3 pointers in the third quarter and the last of them, by 6′ 4″ sophomore Aiden Schomp, cut Central Dauphin’s lead to 35-26. Central Dauphin responded with a 10-0 run on two hoops inside by Hill, a drive by Laudermilch, a fast break layup by Dockins, and a layup by Renaldi. That run gave Central Dauphin a 45-26 lead at the end of the third quarter. Central Dauphin cleared the bench in the fourth quarter.

This was a difficult matchup for Cedar Crest, and they had a thoughtful game plan. Rather than trying to run with the deep, quick, and taller Central Dauphin squad, Cedar Crest focused on half court sets, passing the ball around the perimeter and patiently looking for shots from beyond the arc. In the first half, Cedar Crest did not ever drive to the hoop. Of their four first half field goals, three of them were 3 pointers. For the entire game, Cedar Crest made nine 3 pointers, and six of the visiting players made at least one from behind the arc. By contrast, Cedar Crest made just three 2 point field goals in the game. Central Dauphin also had a tremendous advantage on the boards, with 19 offensive rebounds to Cedar Crest’s 18 defensive rebounds. Schomp played well for Cedar Crest, making two of his team’s three two point field goals, and sinking three 3 pointers. Nine Central Dauphin players scored in the game, and Cedar Crest had great difficulty containing Hill, a Niagara U. recruit.

Central Dauphin outrebounded Cedar Crest 43 to 23. Central Dauphin committed 13 turnovers to 15 for Cedar Crest. Central Dauphin was four of six from the free throw line, and Cedar Crest was seven of 12. Central Dauphin made five 3 pointers, and Cedar Crest made nine.

Central Dauphin scoring: Donovan Hill 20, Jaydon Laudermilch 11, Andrew Renaldi 7, Keon Dockins 4, Daron Haggans 3, Jett Franz 2, Christian Wilburn 2, Travis Linn 2, and Wayne Fletcher II 2.

Cedar Crest scoring: Aiden Schomp 16, Fernando Marquez 7, Jake Wolfe 6, Nolan Groff 4, Leo Tirado 3, J’Veon Reyes-Vega 3, and Owen Chernich 1.

Cedar Crest 6 8 12 14-40
Central Dauphin 10 19 16 8-53
