FATHER JUDGE DEFEATS ENGINEERING & SCIENCE 72-64

Father Judge overcame an eight point third quarter deficit to defeat Carver Engineering & Science 72-64 in a fiercely contested game between two Philadelphia teams played at Archbishop Ryan in the first matchup of an opening night triple header sponsored by the website cityofbaketballlove.com. Judge displayed a more uptempo offense under new coach Chris Roantree than they have in past seasons, and this game featured two teams looking for fast breaks at every opportunity. After a see saw first quarter, Engineering & Science built a small lead in the second frame, largely via free throws. Judge committed nine team fouls in the first 8:30 of the game, and Engineering & Science went to the line 22 times in the first half. Judge, on the other hand, was particularly effective from the outside, and three players combined for four scores from behind the arc in the first 16 minutes.

The teams both played more under control in the second half. Late in the third quarter, a three point play by superb Engineering & Science 6′ 6″ senior Denzel Figueroa broke a 45-45 tie. This was followed by a three pointer by 5′ 10″ Engineering & Science senior Taimar Stubbs, then a Stubbs jumper, and Engineering & Science had their biggest lead of the game at 53-45, going into the fourth quarter. However, Figueroa was knocked out of the game with an injury, and that proved to be pivotal for the outcome. With Figueroa, one of the top players in the Philadelphia Public League, on the bench, Judge rallied, hitting four 3 pointers in a 27 point fourth quarter. Particularly outstanding down the stretch was 6′ 2″ Judge senior Jalen Flowers, who scored 15 of his 24 points in the final frame.

In this fast paced, intensely contested game, there were 10 ties and four lead changes. Poor free throw shooting sharply reduced Engineering & Science’s prospects.

Engineering & Science had a 43-33 advantage on the boards, but they had 18 turnovers to 12 for Judge. Judge was 22 for 33 from the free throw line, while Engineering & Science was only 19 for 40. Judge made 10 3 pointers in the game, and five different players hit from beyond the arc. Engineering & Science made five 3 pointers.

Father Judge scoring: Jalen Flowers 24, Kyle Jones 11, Mike McCusker 9, Tearran Peete 8, Paul King 7, Jordan Rhinehart 6, Ernest Shelton 4, and Nolan Waldon 3

Carver Engineering & Science scoring: Taimar Stubbs 23, Denzel Figueroa 20, Nile Mosby 6, Chase Warren 4, Solomon Jones 4, Anthony Brown 3, Cerek Sargeant-Thomas 2, and Ethan Lee 2.

Carver Engineering & Science 14 17 22 11-64
