IMHOTEP CHARTER DEFEATS ROMAN CATHOLIC 70-60

It was standing room only on Wednesday night at St. Joseph’s Prep for an early season showdown between two of the best teams in Pennsylvania, and Imhotep Charter defeated Roman Catholic 70-60 in a competitive game played at a high level of skill. These teams are very well coached, and both squads have numerous outstanding players.

Roman scored the game’s first points on a shot from behind the arc by 6′ 7″ senior Matija Radunovic, but Imhotep forged ahead with a balanced attack in which six players scored in the first quarter. 6′ 7″ Imhotep junior Justin Edwards was particularly outstanding in the first frame, scoring five points in the stanza, and he proved to be difficult to guard throughout the game. Edwards is equally adept at driving to the basket and shooting jumpers. His jumper at 2:52 of the first quarter gave Imhotep a 14-7 lead. Imhotep boosted their lead to eight points late in the first half, but 3 pointers by Roman’s 6′ 1″ junior Xzayvier Brown and 6′ 3″ senior Khalil Farmer cut Imhotep’s lead to 30-26 at halftime.

Imhotep held narrow leads in the third quarter until Xzayvier Brown stole the ball and scored on a three point play on a fast break layup and a free throw with 2:10 left in the frame to give Roman a 42-41 lead. The teams traded leads four more times, until Edwards hit a 3 pointer in the fourth quarter to give Imhotep a 57-55 lead. From that point, Imhotep never relinquished the lead.

These teams are outstanding. They had four turnovers, combined, in the first half, and they were unselfish, quick, and disciplined on offense. There were some spectacular assists in the game by both teams, and both offenses maintained continuity throughout. At various times in the game, both teams played man-to-man and zone defenses, and the teams switched defenses easily and effectively.

Imhotep had a slight rebounding advantage, 31 to 28. Roman committed five turnovers, and Imhotep committed eight. Imhotep was 13 for 19 from the stripe, and Roman was eight for 12. Imhotep made six 3 point shots, and Roman made five. There were two ties and seven lead changes.

Imhotep Charter scoring: Rahmir Barno 23, Justin Edwards 16, Ahmad Nowell 10, Ronny Raphael 6, Amaury Hunter 6, Malcolm Muhammad 6, and Yahmir Satterfield 3.

Roman Catholic scoring: Xzayvier Brown 23, Khalil Farmer 13, Daniel Skillings 10, Toby Ojukwu 6, Shareef Jackson 4, and Matija Radunovic 3.

Imhotep Charter 21 9 17 23-70
Roman Catholic 16 10 20 14-60
