METHACTON DEFEATS LANSDALE CATHOLIC 53-40

Never trailing in the game, Methacton defeated visiting Lansdale Catholic 53-40 in a matchup of two teams with very deliberate offenses. Lansdale Catholic was slow starting in this contest, committing five turnovers in the first quarter and quickly falling behind. 6′ 8″ Methacton senior Cole Hargrove had a superb first quarter, grabbing four rebounds, blocking two shots, and scoring three points. Fellow Methacton senior Brett Byrne netted eight points in the first frame, and the hosts had a double digit lead by the end of the first quarter. Lansdale Catholic’s offense was very perimeter oriented, underscored by their inability to get to the free throw line in the first half. Nine of Lansdale Catholic’s 21 first half points came from shots from beyond the arc. Three different Methacton players made a 3 pointer each in the second quarter, and the outcome was never in doubt.

Methacton did a better job of getting the ball inside to Hargrove in the second half, and Lansdale Catholic had real difficulty defending him. Switching to a 1-2-2 zone didn’t help much, although a couple of third quarter Lansdale Catholic 3 pointers kept the score respectable. Lansdale Catholic cut Methacton’s lead to 35-29 midway in the third quarter, but a 3 pointer by Matt Christian quelled the visitors’ rally, and Lansdale Catholic didn’t threaten much after that. In the final period, Lansdale Catholic committed five turnovers and made only one field goal.

Methacton out rebounded Lansdale Catholic 33 to 23. The visitors committed 12 turnovers to 10 by Methacton. Methacton was 5 for 8 from the foul line, and Lansdale Catholic was 5 for 9. Lansdale Catholic made five 3 pointers, and Methacton made four.

Methacton’s Hargrove finished with 16 points, 11 rebounds, five blocks, two assists, and a steal. His teammate, Byrne, also played well, with 18 points, four rebounds, two blocks, and two assists. Matt Christian added 10 points, Colin Meyer netted five, and Cam Chilson scored 4 points for Methacton.

Methacton’s record is now 3-0, while Lansdale Catholic is 0-3.

Lansdale Catholic 5 16 13 6-40
Methacton 15 16 11 11-53
