PENN CHARTER DEFEATS GERMANTOWN FRIENDS 59-51

In a close–but sloppy–game on Tuesday afternoon, visiting Penn Charter defeated Germantown Friends 59-51. These two Philadelphia schools are not part of the PIAA. Germantown Friends is a member of the Friends Schools League, while Penn Charter is a member of the oldest scholastic sports conference in America, the Inter-Academic League.

The two teams were fairly evenly matched. Neither has much height and the teams’ skills levels were similar. There were five ties and eight lead changes in the game, but both teams were in early season form, meaning that there were lots of fouls and turnovers.

Both teams opened the game in man-to-man defenses, and shooters for both teams were cold in the early going. Although Germantown Friends had a 28 to 13 advantage on the boards in the first half, they also committed eight turnovers in that span to two for Penn Charter. By the middle of the second quarter, the game had a frantic pace, followed by a series of lead changes. Just before halftime, veteran Penn Charter reserve Colin Schumm hit a 3 pointer to give his team a 27-25 lead, and the visitors never trailed from that point.

Germantown Friends managed to tie the game at 27 early in the third quarter, but, after that, Penn Charter mostly maintained small leads. Late in the third stanza, Penn Charter went up by eight points and briefly switched to a zone defense. Germantown Friends tied the game at 46 early in the fourth quarter, but Penn Charter pulled away again to seal the win. Penn Charter reserve Scott Doran was particularly impressive down the stretch, grabbing some clutch rebounds, clogging the lane on defense to impede drives to the basket, and sinking a key field goal.

Germantown Friends had a 41 to 36 rebounding edge, but they committed 15 turnovers to Penn Charter’s 7. Penn Charter was 12 for 28 from the line, and Germantown Friends was 14 for 17. Penn Charter sank 6 3s, while Germantown Friends made 3 shots from beyond the arc.

Penn Charter scoring: Trey Shinholster 15, Mark Butler 13, Colin Schumm 9, Keith Gee 8, Isaiah Grimes 5, Kai Shinholster 4, Kevin Cotton 3, and Scott Doran 2.

Germantown Friends scoring: Muhsin Muhammad 18, Jordan Dill 13, Amir Staten 12, Hanif Goins 4, Benjamin King 3, and Henry Zabierek 1.

This was Germantown Friends’ first game this season. Penn Charter is now 2-0.

Penn Charter 11 16 19 13-59
Germantown Friends 9 16 16 10-51
