Scranton Holds Off Williamsport in Title Rematch

Scranton 47, Williamsport 42

WILKES-BARRE – Only one team advances to PIAA State Tournament in the 6A classification creating much more tension in the District 2/4 Subregional championship game between Scranton and Williamsport.
Last season, Williamsport came into the title game as the underdog and fell to Scranton, 48-39.  This year Scranton was able to deliver a similar result as the Knights secured their spot in the state tournament with a 47-42 victory over the Millionaires.
With buckets from and Elijah Frierson, Billtown sprinted out to a quick 7-2 advantage.  With a deep bench and frequent lineup changes Williamsport kept their foot on the gas and extended their advantage to 14-7 late into the opening frame.
A late mid-range jumper from Jason Shields not only cut the deficit to five points, but sparked a 10-0 run that allowed the Knights to establish some control of the game.  After the first buzzer, Scranton was able to adjust their defense and ‘Port failed to find an answer.  AJ Dinterman’s triple would give the Knights their first lead of the game and Arvel Chandler followed it with another bucket for a three-point lead.  JJ Beagle would stop the run with a mid-range jumper but after an excellent first period, the Millionaire’s offense would falter and not make another shot until the second half.
Dinterman, Chandler and Shields would each score before the end of the half, flipping the script and giving Scranton a 23-16 lead at halftime.
Kenon Brown would find the hoop to start the second half, but buckets from Dinterman, Shields and Joshua Williams would give Scranton a 6-0 run and a double-digit lead early in the second half.
Taylor’s triple would spark the Millionaire offense as Frierson and George Whaley would each score to cut the lead back to four points.  Chandler would stop the run with a triple, but Brown would go coast-to-coast before the end of the frame to keep Williamsport within striking distance as the game progressed into the final quarter, 34-27.
The Knights and Millionaires would trade buckets to start the final quarter until back-to-back steals and finishes from Brown pulled Williamsport with two points.  Chandler would once again end the run with a bucket as the Knights would fend off Williamsport’s late push to win the game 47-42.
Jason Shields led all scorers with 17 points in his team’s championship victory.  Arvel Chandler added ten points and five boards in the contest.  Joshua Williams came up with key plays throughout the contest finishing with four points, five rebounds in addition to his three steals.
Williamsport would have eight players on the scoresheet, led by Kenon Brown and Xavier Taylor with 12 points apiece.  Elijah Frierson finished the contest with a game-high four steals as his team attempted to make a late comeback.
With the victory Scranton (21-2) has secured its spot in the upcoming PIAA State Tournament where they will host West Chester East (1-9, 19-7) on Wednesday night.
