Third Quarter Run Keys Riverside Victory

Riverside 75, SLA at Beeber 57

TAYLOR – After a back-and-forth first 16 minutes, Riverside used a 12-0 run to start the second half to grab a lead that they would not give up as the scrappy and thoroughly-tenacious Vikings advanced to the Boys 3A Second Round with a 75-57 win over Science Leadership Academy at Beeber.  They will next battle surging District 12 Champion Devon Prep from the Philly Catholic League on Wednesday evening at Bethlehem Liberty (7:30 pm).  This was an intense, physical matchup that included a tremendous number of free throws (63 total) and the imbalance was worth noting (43 for the Vikes and 20 for the Rockets).

Riverside got 5 quick points from Matthew Godlewski and a pair of free throws from Brayden Rose to take a 7-3 lead.  SLA Beeber then got a second and third triple from Jahad Marable to go up 10-8.  The Vikings were able to take advantage of a pair of turnovers to take a 13-11 lead at the 1:39 mark.  Drew Holland scored on a putback and added a pair of free throws as SLA regained the lead, 17-14.  Teams traded shots from the charity stripe as the Rockets had the lead after one frame, 18-15.

In the second quarter, Riverside charged back to take a 6-point edge before SLA Beeber rallied to take the lead at intermission.  The 8-0 Vikings run began with a pair of scores inside by Brayden Rose, the second of which featured a terrific spin move.  Godlewski scored followed by Connor McNally hitting a pair of free throws for a 23-18 lead.  Holland and Sa’d Jamaladdan steadied things for the Rockets, but Gerry Rose drove in for a 28-22 lead with under three minutes remaining in the first half.  Enter Cameron Reid off the Rockets’ bench who proceeded make an immediate impact to cut the gap to a single point with a triple and fast break layup.  Marable completed the 7-0 run giving SLA Beeber a 29-28 lead with a pair of free throws with under a minute left in the half.  A jaw-dropping sequence ensued in which several Vikes dove to the floor under the basket for a loose ball that somehow ended up in the hands of Gerry Rose who proceeded to nail the traditional 3-point play sending the capacity home crowd into a frenzy as Riverside regained a 31-29 lead.  That elation was short-lived, however, as Jamaladdan netted a triple giving the Rockets a 32-31 lead at the break.  Through 16 minutes, this one was highly-entertaining and very competitive.

McNally connected in the first minute of the second half giving the edge back to Riverside.  It would be the start of a 12-0 run as the Vikes grabbed complete momentum taking a 43-32 lead.  That run also included Gerry Rose scoring off his blocked shot, another McNally trey, and smooth alley-oop layup by Brayden Rose.  The Rockets ended their 4:30 scoring drought, but the Vikings continued their strong third frame behind McNally’s 11 points as their lead ballooned to 14 points, 50-36.  Holland got a layup at the buzzer sending this one to the final quarter with Riverside leading 50-38.

The final period featured a parade of trips to the foul line, 15 combined for both teams.  The Vikes hit 14 of 18 while Marable continued to play very well for the Rockets, including a pair of game-ending slams as this one finished 75-57.

Riverside got 22 points from Gerry Rose and 21 points each from Connor McNally and Brayden RoseMatthew Godlewski and Matthew Alfieri combined to add 11 points.  The Vikings hit 33 of their 43 trips to the foul line and netted 4 triples.

Science Leadership Academy at Beeber was paced by Jahad Marable with 25 points.  Drew Holland added 12 points and Sa’d Jamaladdan added 10 points.  Cameron Reid and Jamel Wiles combined for 10 points.  The Rockets hit 5 triples and made 12 of their 20 free throws.
