DUNMORE – Playing their second game in less than 20 hours and fresh off an emotional 51-50 win over cross-borough rival Dunmore, Holy Cross showed no signs of fatigue in Saturday’s afternoon matinee.  The Crusaders used a tenacious, trapping defense and terrific ball movement to complement their red-hot shooting in defeating Lackawanna Division 4 contender Forest City, 83-55.

Logan Tierney had a terrific first quarter for the Crusaders scoring 11 of his 13 points as Holy Cross built a double-digit lead putting up 27 points on the scoreboard.  Gabe Gonzales got a reverse layup followed by a corner triple by Max Urbas giving Forest City a brief 3-2 edge, their only lead of the day.  Tierney would get a 5-0 spurt keyed by a triple and putback.   A layup by Michael Hughes gave the Crusaders a 9-3 advantage.  The Foresters did not get rattled as they closed the gap to 11-8 as Dylan Bezek nailed a triple and layup.  This one was going at a frantic pace just two minutes into the game.  And the offensive barrage continued for Holy Cross as treys by Hughes and Cullen Moran helped give them an early double-digit lead, 21-10, lead.  Both teams finished the first stanza getting inside scores that showed finesse and hustle by both squads.  Gonzales and Tierney got layups for the Crusaders while Max Urbas got a layup off a loose ball while DJ Heath got a fast break layup for the ForestersHayden Hosie connected on a basket in the lane giving Holy Cross a 27-19 lead in what was an entertaining opening period.

Buoyed by five more triples in the second quarter, Holy Cross played an impressive eight minutes as they took a 20-point advantage into the locker room.  Teams played even for the first few minutes as the Foresters had a response to every HC score.  Matt Lyons triple was countered by a basket by Collin Bailer.  A pair of scores by Hayden Hosie were each followed by clutch Forest City baskets – a trey by Heath and nifty scoop shot in the lane by Davon Reams that cut the deficit again to eight points, 34-26.  The rest of the period featured a pair of triples by both Gonzales and Hughes as Holy Cross expanded their advantage to 49-30 with over a minutes left in the half – the second triple by Gonzales giving the Crusaders a 52-32 lead at the break.

Forest City played well in the third period as they limited any further damage on the scoreboard.  Reams, who plays tall getting his share of rebounds, got things started with a terrific drive down the lane and dishing out to Bezek for the triple reducing the deficit to 52-35.  But the Crusaders would get scores from Gonzales, Tierney (drive in for layup), Hosie (triple), and Hughes (jumper in lane) as they went on a 9-2 run to take command, 61-36.  Forest City would finish the period on a 6-2 spurt as they got a driving layup from Bezek, fast break layup from Reams, and pair of free throws by Bezek to make it a 63-42 game heading into the final frame.

Holy Cross continued to connect from long-range hitting three more triples in the final quarter (Gonzales, Hosie, and Mario Matrone).  Forest City got to the charity stripe often scoring 8 of their 13 points.  And frustrations were getting a bit elevated as both teams were hit with a technical foul during the period – one on the Forest City bench and one on a Crusaders’ player.  This one wrapped up with Holy Cross coming away with an impressive 83-55 victory.

Hayden Hosie led Holy Cross with 20 points while Gabe Gonzales added 17 points (including 3 triples).  Both Logan Tierney and Michael Hughes netted 13 points.  Hughes had 3 triples on the day.  As a team, the Crusaders connected on 12 triples and were 3 of 6 from the free throw line.

Dylan Bezek paced Forest City with 16 points.  DJ Heath scored 9 points while Max Urbas and John Conalogue each added 8 points.  The Foresters had 5 triples and were 16 of 23 from the charity stripe.

Both teams are in contention for division championships as Lackawanna League play wraps up this week.   On Tuesday, Holy Cross hosts Carbondale while Forest City entertains Montrose
