Mid Valley Rolls to Big Win Over Riverside

Mid Valley 61, Riverside 38

TAYLORMid Valley displayed outstanding balance on both ends of the floor Tuesday night as the Spartans got an impressive 61-38 road win over Riverside, giving them sole possession of second place in the Lackawanna League Division 3 race.  Their offense used a terrific combination of fast breaks and crisp passing to get high percentage inside opportunities and open shots from the perimeter.  The Vikings struggled to hit their shots and could not find any offensive rhythm as they were hounded by the Spartans’ defense all evening.  Aside from an early 2-2 tie two minutes into the contest, Mid Valley led the entire way.

This one started out with several misses and turnovers by both squads.  Mid Valley took an 8-2 lead off a pair of jump shots from Danny Nemitz and foul line basket from Nathan SadakaRiverside got a layup from Richie Kostoff to cut it to 8-4.  The Spartans then went on an 8-2 run that got started with a floater by Mason O’Malley and long triple by NemitzFrankie Antoniacci hit a reverse layup before Ricky Vinansky hit a corner trey for a 13-4 Spartans’ lead.  The Vikings chipped into the deficit by getting a turnaround baseline shot and pair of free throws from Antoniacci (8 of their 10 first period points) to cut it to 16-10.

The second frame had both teams playing a bit sloppy and a bit out of control.  Matthew Godlewski hit a shot at the 5:13 mark to bring Riverside within four points, 16-12.  Mid Valley then got a 6-0 spurt with back-to-back layups from Vinansky along with another basket in the lane by Nemitz to take a double-digit lead at 22-12.  The Vikings were pushing their offense, but were not connecting on their outside shots.  A big triple from Antoniacci came at the 3:17 mark cutting it to 22-15, but Riverside would be held scoreless for the rest of the first half as the Spartans would finish with a 5-0 run keyed by O’Malley (corner triple and layup) to send Mid Valley into the locker with full momentum and a 27-15 lead.  The Spartans were using great ball movement to find their wide-open scoring opportunities.

The Mid Valley run continued into the second half as they used back-to-back triples from Sadaka (great hustle to get his own rebound) and Brady Lettieri to take a commanding 33-15 lead two minutes into the third period.  The Spartans were doing a stellar job in knowing when to push the action and when to run their offense.  Teams traded scores through much of the period.  Mid Valley got strong, consecutive drives to the basket by Nemitz and Demaja Dunston to take a 41-21 lead.  Riverside finished the quarter on a 4-0 run with a pair of free throws by Connor Monahan and score by Antoniacci to reduce to gap to 41-25.

Nemitz began the final frame with a terrific reverse layup and coast-to-coast drive wrapped around a putback by Antoniacci (45-27).  After Antoniacci and Vinansky traded layups, the Vikings made one final push with a 5-0 run off a triple by Michael Rhoades and basket by Antoniacci cutting it to 47-34.  Mid Valley, however, went on a 9-0 run with two scores by Vinansky, triple by Sadaka, and pair of free throws by Nemitz to lead 56-34.  The Spartans would close this out with another pair of layups by Vinansky and Nemitz to get the 61-38 victory.

Mid Valley was led by Danny Nemitz and Ricky Vinansky who each netted 19 points.  The Spartans got 8 points each from Nathan Sadaka and Mason O’MalleyBrady Lettieri, Jakob Lesher, and Demaja Dunston combined to add 7 points.  They had 6 triples and were 3 of 5 from the free throw line.

Riverside was paced by Frankie Antoniacci with 19 points.  Connor McNally contributed 8 points.  Connor Monahan, Michael Rhoades, Matthew Godlewski, and Richie Kostoff combined to score 11 points.  The Vikings only connected on 2 treys and were 10 of 11 from the charity stripe.

Both teams are back in action Friday night.  Mid Valley visits Lakeland while Riverside visits Division 4 contender Blue Ridge in a crossover game (that does not count in the division standings).
