Faux Nails 7 Triples to Key Dallas Comeback Victory

Dallas 56, Boys’ Latin Charter 52

DALLAS – Local hoops fans have come to expect a certain style of basketball from the Mountaineers – a tenacious defense that helps create explosive fast-break offense.  But, on Saturday afternoon against a challenging District 12 opponent, the early tempo was firmly established by Boys’ Latin Charter.  Their quickness in creating turnovers and patient, work-the-ball around style helped the Warriors build a 13-2 lead, resulting in a pair of early timeouts in which the Dallas coaching staff vocally challenged their squad to dial-up their intensity.  It worked.  The Mounts rallied for a hard-fought 56-52 victory.
Dallas began to chip away at their 11-point first period deficit as Jude Nocito connected on a triple.  Nick Williams then displayed some terrific defensive pressure in getting a steal and layup.  Nocito and Cameron Faux would then connect from long-range followed by steal and layup at the buzzer by Darius Wallace to cut the Boys’ Latin lead to a single basket, 17-15.
The Mounts seemed to lose their momentum through much of the second quarter, giving up unforced turnovers, struggling from the charity stripe, and missing several scoring opportunities.  Perry Fields continued his stellar first half effort for the Warriors (11 of his 19 points) hitting a pair of baskets to keep his team in front.  Faux knotted the game briefly at 19 before Boys’ Latin inched back ahead, taking a 24-22 edge into the locker room.
The third stanza had Dallas fans convinced that there must be a lid on the rim as shot after shot rolled off the iron.  Tysir Hicks got a pair of scores in close, giving the Warriors a 29-22 lead.  Nocito would key a 5-0 run with a nifty fast-break pass to Wallace followed by another triple by Faux (one of his 7 on the day).  Fields and Michael Stewart responded with a 5-0 spurt to again put Boys’ Latin up by seven (34-27).  The Mountaineers then countered with a pivotal, game-changing 10-0 run to end the period, getting a pair of triples from Faux and one from Nocito to send the small, but boisterous, home crowd to their feet.  Nick Farrell would add a free throw to send Dallas into the final quarter leading 37-34.
The Mounts took their largest lead of the game (42-35) as Faux drained yet another trey, but Fields and Hicks brought the Warriors back to within 42-40 with 6:00 remaining in the game.  Nocito would connect on a triple as Dallas again went up by seven, 47-40.  Boys’ Latin did not get flustered as they got a pair of free throws from Terrell Pough, a triple by Hicks, and another score by Pough off a Mounts’ turnover to deadlock this one at 47 midway through the final period.  Dallas was finally able to put some distance on the scoreboard, getting 3 free throws from Michael Bufalino wrapped around a trey by Nocito to go up 53-47 with 2:13 remaining.  In the closing moments, a layup by Wallace and free throw by Nocito secured the 56-52 victory for the Mountaineers.
Dallas was led by Cameron Faux with 21 points (7 triples) and Jude Nocito who scored 14 points (4 triples).  Both Darius Wallace and Michael Bufalino each added 7 points while Nick Williams netted 6 points.  Wallace played some terrific defense using pressure and quick hands to create turnovers.  Dallas struggled from the free throw line, only converting 9 of 21 opportunities.
Boys’ Latin Charter was paced by Perry Fields with 19 points.  He was joined in double figures by Tysir Hicks (13 points) and Michael Stewart (11 points).  The Warriors also had their challenges from the charity stripe, only hitting 9 of 19 chances.
Dallas (2-0) will host undefeated Scranton Prep (2-0) on Tuesday night.
