Scranton Prep Rolls Into Second Round

Scranton Prep 55, North Schuylkill 22

SCRANTON – As the fans filed into the Xavier Center following a rain-soaked ending to the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade just a handful of blocks away, the anticipation was high as Scranton Prep was looking to begin another state playoff run.  Their opponent, North Schuylkill, also has a longtime tradition of Girls’ hoops success.  Early on, when the shots weren’t falling for the Classics and the Lady Spartans were getting numerous offensive rebounds, Scranton Prep continued to excel in what they always do well – play outstanding defense.  The result was forcing an assortment of turnovers, including a 10-second call, a 5-second guarding call, and a 5-second inbound call.  And, when their shots did start falling, they outscored their opponent 47-15 after the first period to notch an impressive 55-22 win advancing into Wednesday’s Second Round against District 1 Champion Villa Joseph Marie (16-9).

Jenna Hillebrand got a steal and layup less than a half minute into the game.  She would then add a corner triple following Haley Koutch’s trey for the Lady Spartans to grab a 5-3 lead.  Maya Jenkins added a layup midway though the frame (7-3 lead) before Brigid Flynn got a putback at the 3:00 mark to cut it to 7-5.  Claire McGrath made a steal but missed the layup.  Bella Dennebaum got fouled on the putback and converted a free throw.  Eve Shovlin came up with another offensive rebound for the Lady Spartans as they trimmed the deficit to a single point, 8-7, after the first quarter.

The basket by Shovlin would be their last score for the next 9:15 as the Classics blanked NS 14-0 in the second period.  Jenkins netted a triple and then drained another one a few moments later following a Lady Spartans’ turnover.  McGrath drove the baseline for a reverse layup for a 16-7 lead.  Hillebrand then made a pair of drives wrapped around free throws by Dennebaum to take a 22-7 lead into the locker room.

After McGrath gave Scranton Prep a 24-7 lead, the triples began to rain with five consecutive ones.  North Schuylkill got a pair from Koutch and one from Olivia Burke to cut the lead to 11 (27-16) before Hillebrand connected on a trey.  It was the start of a 12-0 run by the Classics that included a fast break layup by Hillebrand and nifty feed from McGrath into Dennebaum for another layup.  Scranton Prep was rolling with a 39-16 lead entering the final period.

North Schuylkill started the final stanza with a 6-0 spurt as Jadelin Stitzer got a pair of scores wrapped around a fast break basket by Shovlin.  The Classics got four triples in the period, one by Hillebrand and the other by reserves (Jacelyn Alers, Kori Ortiz, and Eva Kaszuba) as they secured the 55-22 victory.

Scranton Prep was led by Jenna Hillebrand with 18 points and Maya Jenkins with 13 points.  Bella Dennebaum, Eva Kaszuba, Claire McGrath, Jacelyn Alers, , and Kori Ortiz combined for 24 points.  The Classics hit 9 triples and converted 8 of 10 free throws.

North Schuylkill was paced by Haley Koutch with 9 points.  Jadelyn Stitzer, Eve Shovlin, Olivia Burke, and Brigid Flynn combined for 13 points.  The Lady Spartans netted 4 triples and did not make any trips to the free throw line.
