Strong Second Half Clinches Division Crown for Dallas

Dallas Lady Mounts 55, Hazleton Area Lady Cougars 47

By Phil T

WILKES-BARRE Dallas hit five triples in the third quarter to overcome a halftime deficit and get a championship win over Hazleton Area, 55-47.

The Lady Mountaineers captured the Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1 title and will next face Lake-Lehman in the WVC tournament on Thursday.  Hazleton Area will take on the Division 2 winner, Holy Redeemer, in the other conference semi-final.

A Brooke Boretski layup and conversion of the “and 1” tied the game up at 9 to end the opening frame. In a back-and-forth second period, the Lady Cougars built a five-point lead in the closing seconds before a triple by Bella Hill would trim the gap to 26-24 as the teams headed into the locker room.

The Lady Cougars would take a 7-point lead early in the second half, but Dallas found their range from behind the arc, hitting five triples in the quarter. At the end of the third period, the Lady Mountaineers would take a 41-37 lead in the midst of a 12-1 run.

Dallas would find themselves in a scoring drought for most of the 4th quarter and all of their 8-point lead would slip away.  Kyra Antolick would hit a triple to tie the game at 46 with 3:08 remaining in the game.  Back-to-back steals by Claire Charlton would lead to a pair of Lady Mounts buckets as Dallas reclaimed the lead for good.  Hazleton Area would not make another shot from the field as the Lady Mountaineers pulled away for the 55-47 win.

Marissa Trivelpiece was once again the Lady Cougars main offense threat, scoring 23 points, but she faced foul trouble for most of the game and was on the bench when the Dallas offense got rolling.

Bella Hill and Lauren Charlton both led the Lady Mountaineers with 13 points. Hill’s 13 points off the bench proved to be a difference maker in an otherwise tight game.
