Trivelpiece Keys Hazleton Area Victory

Hazleton Area 52, Berwick Area 36

HAZLETON – Not sure whether Hazleton Area came into tonight’s game needing any extra motivation.  Sure, Lady Cougars’ fans may have circled this one as an opportunity to avenge their only conference loss (32-31 to Berwick Area back on January 6).  But, to the players, this one seemed more about completing unfinished business after being held to only three final period points in their last match-up.  While Hazleton Area may have lit up the scoreboard with 36 combined points from Marissa Trivelpiece and Faith Grula, it was also the sensational defensive effort by both players on the other end of the floor – Trivelpiece with a few key blocks and Grula with quick hands knocking the ball away –  to stop several scoring opportunities by Berwick.

This one started out with baskets by Renny Murphy and Emily Quimet to give the Lady Dawgs their only leads of the night (2-0 and 4-2).  After Hazleton Area turned the ball over a few times trying to force it inside on a very tight and effective Berwick zone, the Lady Cougars got a 5-2 run to take a 14-9 lead heading in the second period.  After a few sloppy passes by both teams, the second quarter settled in to be close most of the way.  The Lady Dawgs had numerous chances to tie the game, but Hazleton Area kept pushing the lead back to four points.  After Katie Starr drained both ends of a 1+1 to cut it to 18-16, the Lady Cougars would go on a 7-0 run in the final 2:53 of the half (including a nifty spin move by Trivelpiece).  Morgan Nevel would hit 1 of 2 free throws for Berwick with no time left on the clock as HA went into the locker room with a 25-17 advantage.

The third period began with an 8-0 run by Hazleton Area which proved to be the deciding difference in the game.  Everyone contributed in that scoring spurt – Olivia Wolk, Trivelpiece got a great block and score followed by field goals by Krya Antolick and Grula.  By the time Murphy responded midway through the quarter with a scoop shot plus foul, the damage was already done as Hazleton Area had a commanding 33-20 lead.  The Lady Dawgs would trim the gap to ten points before Wolk hit a corner triple with 6 ticks left for a 41-28 edge.  The Lady Cougars were very patient through the final stanza with Trivelpiece netting 7 more points, highlighted by a terrific feed underneath to make the layup and subsequent foul shot.  This one ended with the Lady Cougars prevailing, 52-36.

Hazleton Area was paced by senior Marissa Trivelpiece with 23 points and senior Faith Grula with 13 points.  Berwick was led by junior Renny Murphy with 11 points while junior Katie Starr scored 8.
