District 2 Semi-Finals Tip-Off

Girls’ 4A:   Dallas 41, Berwick 40 (OT)

Boys’ 3A:   Riverside 77, Wyoming Seminary 69

EXETER – The Semi-Final Round has tipped off across District 2 and the excitement is just beginning.  At Wyoming Area tonight, fans were treated to an overtime thriller followed by an improbable upset.

The night kicked off with a Girls’ 4A match-up between Dallas and Berwick.

During the regular season, the Lady Mountaineers defeated the Lady Bulldogs in both of their conference games, but from the very start you knew that tonight was somewhat different.

Berwick jumped out to an early lead and would never trail in regulation.

Early in the fourth quarter, the Lady Bulldogs extended their lead to nine points but that was when Dallas got going. With under a minute remaining in the period, Lauren Charlton would make her way to the basket to tie the game at 36.

Berwick would still have a chance to win the game in regulation, however. With 5 seconds left on the clock, Morgan Nevel was at the line for a one-and-one bonus free throw, but she would miss the shot.

The Lady Bulldogs woes from the charity stripe would continue into overtime as they would only convert two of their first four chances (7-15 in the game).  That set the stage for Bella Hill to give the Lady Mountaineers their first lead with a triple with 1:55 remaining in the overtime frame.

With 8.9 seconds remaining in OT and the Lady Dawgs down by one, they would have another shot to get the lead at the free throw line. Rachael Whitenight would miss both of her attempts and the clock would expire before Berwick could get another shot off in the 41-40 Dallas win.

Eight players would get on the Lady Mountaineers scoresheet, led by Lauren Charlton with 11, 9 of them coming after halftime.

Katie Starr led the Lady Bulldogs with 19 points and 9 rebounds.

Dallas will take on undefeated Scranton Prep for the Girls’ 4A District Championship on Thursday evening.

Berwick will play against Nanticoke Area in the consolation game Tuesday evening,  The winner will advance to the state tournament.

The next game on the slate was a Boys’ 3A Semi-Final match-up between top-seeded Wyoming Seminary and #4 seed Riverside.

The Vikings would get a hot hand from the field and upset Sem for a 77-69 victory.

In the opening frame, the Blue Knights led by 11 points on two different occasions.

Riverside never gave in as they would hit 10 shots from the field in the second quarter, taking a 37-28 lead into the halftime break.

Sem would fight back in the second half, trailing by just four points entering the final period.

The Blue Knights would pull to within one point, but after a technical foul was called on Todd Phillips, Sem would begin to see the game drift further away.

Michael Rickert had 23 points and Brandon Reed had 20 as they led the Vikings to the win.

Ethan Meuser would lead the Blue Knights with 25 points and 7 rebounds.

Riverside and Holy Rdeemer will play for the District 2 Championship at Mohegan Sun Arena on Thursday evening.  Both have also secured spots in the PIAA State Tournament.
