EXETER – If their 49-47 Second Round victory over Marian Catholic on Wednesday night was a classic example of “survive and advance”, then Friday’s Quarter-Final 45-29 win over Faith Christian Academy might have been a bit of “thrive and advance”.  The final eight minutes of those two games could not have been more different.  After going over 5 minutes without a score through the third period as the Lions began clawing their way back from a 13-point deficit, Montrose got some much-needed offensive punch as Riley Keihl drove down the lane to score.  While it would be her only points in the contest, it helped key a game-ending run as the Lady Meteors prevailed over the District 1 champion advancing to Monday night’s Girls 2A Semi-Finals against District 6 Champion Homer Center (23-7) at a site and time to be announced.

Montrose jumped out to a 7-2 lead and built it into an eleven-point advantage after the first quarter (18-7) as their duo of Mia Snyder and Paley Adams combined to score 14 of their points.  Mia Snyder netted a trey for a 3-0 lead.  Haley Pompey and Adams then got inside scores wrapped around a basket by Kendall Garber.  Mikayla Hissner connected on a triple for FCA, trimming it to 7-5 midway through the period.  However, the Lady Meteors then scored 9 straight points over the next three minutes highlighted by Mia Snyder scoring her career 1,000th point via a free throw at the 4:06 mark.  She’d add another basket along with Adams converting 3 of 4 free throws.  Adams got a putback approaching a minute remaining in the period for a 16-5 lead.  Autumn Landis connected on a pair of free throws before Mya Snyder got a score to end the first period sending the Lady Meteors into the second period with an 18-7 advantage.  Overall, Montrose was being vey effective getting to the basket and they were controlling the boards.

The second quarter began with a series of turnovers and missed treys by Faith ChristianMontrose wasn’t fairing any better.  After 6 scoreless minutes, The Lions finally broke the scoring drought with a free throw and layup by Bella Forker cutting their to 18-10.  Montrose then got a score by Gracie Dalton and a nifty move to basket by Mya Snyder to score just before the halftime buzzer giving the wih a 22-10 lead.

Montrose came out of the locker room with renewed focus and grabbed a 23-10 lead as Mia Snyder went to the line following a steal and full court drive to the basket.  Faith Christian then got a quick 5-0 spurt as Maddee Huber hit a triple followed by Forker creating a steal and finishing off at the other end with a layup.  Suddenly, it was 23-15 and the mostly Montrose crowd could sense momentum slipping away.  Over the next minute, the Lady Meteor faithful were erupting as Mia Snyder drove into the lane for a score.  Odd the missed “and 1 “ opportunity, Montrose came up with the rebound and immediately got it back to Mia Snyder who drained a triple for a 28-15 lead.  Montrose had an opportunity to add to their lead from the charity stripe, but came up empty at the 4:40 mark.  Another rally began for Faith Christian over the remainder of the period as Montrose would be blanked on the scoreboard.  Autumn Landis got thigs going with a corner triple.  Forker then added another one.  Ava Lopez added a free throw before Huber scored a minute later reducing the gap to four points, 28-24.  At this point, Montrose was appearing to be a bit fatigued as this one was about to get even closer.

The Faith Christian run continued into the final stanza as Aubrey Sauers come off the bench to bring FCA within a single basket, 28-26.  Dalton then got a score plus a pair of later free throws.  Following traveling calls against both teams, Mia Snyder scored at the 5:34 mark putting the Lady Meteors back up by eight, 34-26.  Hissner then connected on another triple as the small, but vocal, group of their fans, voiced their pleasure, as their only trailed by five points, 34-29.  That’s when Riley Keihl drove into the lane making it a seven-point lead.  A half-minute later, Mia Snyder dazzled the crowd with a sensational drive taking the ball around her back before hitting a scoop layup.  Their senior leader then netted four consecutive free throws over the next minute to make it a 42-29 lead as the celebration was already starting in the stands even though 2:30 remained on the clock.  The Lady Meteors played to take time off the clock.  Hayley Pompey would get a wide open layup securing the impressive 45-29 victory.

Mia Snyder paced Montrose with 21 points.  Paley Adams and Mya Snyder each netted 7 points.  Mya Snyder, Haley Pompey, and Riley Keihl combined to score 10 points.  The Lady Meteors connected on 13 of 20 free throw opportunities and made a pair of triples.

Faith Christian Academy was paced by Bella Focker who netted 7 points while Mikalya Hissner added 6 points.  Five other players combined to contribute 16 points.  The Lions hit 4 of 9 opportunities from the charity strips and connected on 5 triples.
