BOYS PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

Josh Samec (6-8 senior forward) is one of several standout players for #3 state-ranked Hazleton Area (8-0), the only remaining undefeated District 2 boys’ team.  An aggressive player who excels all over the floor, Samec has helped power the Cougars to a 77.6 ppg scoring average.  He scored 19 points in their 94-64 win over Wyoming Valley West.  The senior forward then connected on 11 points in a 72-33 romp over top rival Crestwood.  Tuesday night, Samec netted a dozen points in their 89-37 victory over Pittston Area setting the stage for a pivotal road showdown at Dallas Friday night.

Leo O’Boyle (6-8 junior forward) has Scranton Prep rolling along with a 5-game winning streak and sitting atop the very competitive Lackawanna Division 1 standings.  O’Boyle scored 11 points in a narrow 55-51 win over Scranton to open league play.  He then contributed 13 including a pair of triples in a 62-40 win over West Scranton.  Then, Tuesday night against heated rival Abington Heights, the 6-8 junior contributed 14 points with 2 treys in a 51-45 victory over the Comets.  Over the three-game span, O’Boyle made all 9 of his free throw attempts.

GIRLS PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

Sarah Holweg (5-6 senior guard) a four-year starter for Wyoming Area has the Lady Warriors off to a 9-0 start, one of two remaining District 2 undefeated girls’ squads.  Last week she scored 18 points in a tight 54-52 victory over Wilkes-Barre Meyers.  Holweg then netted 20 points with 2 triples in their 52-40 win over Wyoming Seminary.  Wednesday night the senior guard hit 21 points including 4 treys in a 54-43 win over Hanover Area.  And, in a non-league tilt Tuesday night, Holweg drained 18 points as her team notched an impressive win over perennial Lackawanna League Division 2 contender Wallenpaupack, 62-57.

Lexi Walsh (5-7 senior guard) helped key Holy Cross to their 7th straight win.  She connected on 22 points with a pair of triples in a 67-47 win over Riverside.  Monday night, the senior guard rallied the Lady Crusaders in the final period for a 51-48 victory over Mid Valley setting up their challenging test Monday night as they visit undefeated crosstown rival Dunmore.
